Sacha Shipway explained: “Its important to be prepared when youre interviewing someone, do your research on them. It is better to have too much information than not enough. Plus, it will make you feel better about going into it. ”.

And Gavin Caney said: “Be prepared and do your research. It makes you look professional, shows you care and creates more trust. ”.

2. Listen

Gavin Caney said, “Let the person you’re interviewing talk, and just listen. You never know when they’ll give you gold.” ”.

In a different sentence, he said, “Don’t be afraid to stray from your plan or prepared questions; it could lead you to a great place.” ”.

Gavin also said, “Even if you have a goal or angle in mind, make sure you always ask open questions or hold discussions to get honest, long feedback that could take your story in a different, and maybe better, direction.” ”.

“Also, it’s important to pay attention to what they’re saying. You may have a plan for how the interview will go, but if someone says something groundbreaking, you may want to focus on that in your next question instead of going right to what you had planned,” agreed Sacha Shipway. ”.

3. Make the interviewee feel comfortable

In this case, Gavin said, “Make the person you’re interviewing feel at ease and like you care about what they have to say.” It takes time for someone to open up and start giving their best answers. ”.

4. Clarify

Sacha Shipway shared that you shouldn’t finish the interview without gaining clarification on anything you feel unsure on. “If you don’t understand what someone is saying, make sure they say it again. Otherwise, how can you share the information with others if you don’t get it yourself?” ”.

5. Don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper

This idea comes from Sacha Shipway, but all good reporters should have it. The need to find that all-important, headline-grabbing piece of information.
