Michael Yonkers

SPB: How does it feel to listen to music from so long ago? Are you the type of musician who likes to play and listen to a lot of old music, or do you usually just put out one album and move on to the next one?

Yonkers: It is a very odd feeling, to say the least. I have been doing music for 52 years, so going back in time is quite a trip. It is not only the music, but the associated memories too.

I do go back in time, from time to time. But, mostly I am in a forward leaning position. I dont think there is any “right” or “wrong” way to look at (listen to) history. A lot can be learned from the past. For me, the past is too overwhelming to deal with on a regular basis.

So, the answer to your question is…

I am a person who mostly “moves on.”

Michael Yonkers has an interesting story: he was dropped by the major leagues, hurt himself, and was discovered again a generation later. That story has already been told in almost every review I’ve read, though. Instead, let’s talk about the rock. His third record with the Minneapolis trio The Blind Shake is called Period. When they get together, they work together fully.

The Blind Shake are a power-garage trio from Minneapolis. They play highly synchronized, precision rock with guitar, tenor guitar, and drums. Michael Yonkers was one of the first people to use noise guitar. He finally became known when Destijl and, later, Sub Pop released Microminiature Love in 2003, which had been recorded in 1968 but never released. The record starts with haunting, dark, and heavy guitars and Yonkers warbly … Read more.

Tell me about yourself. This question seems simple, so many people fail to prepare for it, but it’s crucial. Here’s the deal: Don’t give your complete employment (or personal) history. Instead, give a pitch—one that’s concise and compelling and that shows exactly why you’re the right fit for the job.
