If you have a letter of recommendation or performance review from a previous employer that describes your attention to detail, let the interviewer know when responding to this question. When a former employer or supervisor comments on your attention to detail, it carries more weight than when you describe yourself. If you do not have a letter or performance review, give an example of why you consider yourself a detail-oriented person.

No one wants to share anything negative about themselves. However, any honest person will admit that they have good and bad characteristics. The important thing is recognizing the things that may need improvement and being willing to address them. Share some things about your personal qualities with the interviewer and remember, when sharing any quality that could be improved, tell how you are working to make a change.

Focus on describing a ‘bad’ quality that the interviewer can construe as a good one. For example, you can say a good quality you have is that you are willing to take on many projects, but your bad quality is you end up becoming a workaholic.

Explain what causes you stress, then focus on ending on a positive note with how you overcome stress. The interviewer does not want to hear you dwell on the stressful events in the workplace but rather how you problem-solve and work through the stress.

“I think we all experience stress in different ways. One of the most experienced work-related stress for me is not being able to give everyone the results that they want in a clinical trial. Although it is frustrating, I am also mature enough to know that if we don’t succeed at something today, we can try again tomorrow.”

“I think I cause myself more stress than any external event or situation. I say that because I put a great deal of pressure on myself to be successful and see things through to the end. As researchers, we don’t always get the results we are hoping for. I have to remind myself this is why we do research. We search, and then we research.”

Researchers will need to travel to attend work-related conferences or work on a clinical trial with some companies. If the interviewer asks this question, they want to ensure you know the job requirements regarding travel and make sure that will not be an issue if hired. If traveling is one of the job requirements, the company should have put that in the job description, so it should not surprise you in the interview.

Focus on assuring the interviewer that traveling will not be an issue when required. Emphasize how you enjoy traveling to new places and do not have outside obligations that prohibit you from doing so.
