Planned Parenthood is the nations largest provider of reproductive health care and sex education, and its often on the front lines of political debates surrounding abortion access and health care legislation. Working at the nonprofit organization requires a certain level of passion for these rights, says Gaitre Lorick, a senior human resources officer at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Here, she talks about how to convey that passion in an interview and get a job with the organization.

What qualities do you look for in every candidate?Two important qualities are a passion for collaborating and a commitment to being in it for the long haul. None of the things we work on here are going to get done tomorrow, and we cant get them done alone. Were looking for people with some stamina.

How often do you hire new people?We have 12,407 employees across the organization currently, and were pretty much always hiring. Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), which is the parent organization, has offices in New York and Washington, D.C. And were always looking for people to join our 66 affiliate offices that work on health education and political activism, and the more than 700 health centers across the country that offer treatment and services to our clients and patients.

What do you expect candidates to know about the company before an interview? We expect that candidates will have a solid sense of Planned Parenthoods mission and values, the types of health care and education services we provide, and that we do policy and advocacy work around sexual and reproductive health issues. We expect them to know the impact we have on peoples lives. The Newsroom section of our websites PlannedParenthood.org and PlannedParenthoodAction.org have the most recent press releases, which give you a good idea of the issues that are most pressing to us right now.

Where do you recruit candidates? The first stop for any candidate should be to visit our website, which we update frequently. We also use a wide variety of recruiting sources to reach candidates, such as Idealist, LinkedIn, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Black Career Womens Network, American Marketing Association, Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives, Hispanic Marketing Association, Career Builders, Association of Womens Rights in Development, Indeed, APF Golden Gates, Mediabistro, Diversity Working, and many more. The goal is to hire the best person for the position each and every time.

How do you use social media for recruiting potential employees? We post all of our national job openings on our website and on our PPFA LinkedIn page. And many of our affiliates have their own LinkedIn profiles where they post their openings. We dont really use Facebook or Twitter for recruitment purposes, although our current staff may share postings with their own networks. Our social media presence is really about sharing information with our supporters and the people who come to us looking for accurate health information and resources.

What types of jobs are available for recent graduates?At the national level, each team — from legal and human resources to education and public relations — has at least one support staff role. These positions are usually called associates or assistants, depending on the team, and are excellent foot-in-the-door positions. Staff in these roles gain a real understanding of all the pieces of work here. Many people who started as support staff have stayed on to grow and advance within the organization.

Do you have an internship program?Every summer we run an internship program from June to August at our national offices in D.C. and New York. Interns must be currently enrolled in a bachelors program or have graduated in the last six months, or they must be in a masters program. The candidates we seek are either currently pursuing their studies in the area theyre seeking to intern in or are very passionate about that area of work.

Can you give a snapshot of what the intern experience is like? Each intern has the option of deciding whether theyd like their internship to be paid or for college credit. Each intern is paired with a mentor, and they visit at least one affiliate office during the summer. And all interns have lunch with our president, Cecile Richards.

Do most full-time positions require a specific degree?We have staff who have worked at hospital systems, schools, magazines, political campaigns, congressional offices, and technology companies. Of course there are positions that do require specific degrees, such as legal and medical professionals. And some teams require technical skills where a degree may certainly be helpful but isnt necessary, such as our finance team or our information services and online teams.

What types of questions do you typically ask in an interview?Everyone has a story of how they became interested in working for Planned Parenthood, and we love to hear what that was. We also like to get a sense of how they work with others. So well ask, “How would former or current coworkers describe you?” We also ask questions about the pace of work that theyre used to. At Planned Parenthood, were often in the center of the national political debate and also on the cutting edge of new health care innovations. Its incredibly exciting and enormously rewarding, but its not always on a nine-to-five schedule — and its never, ever slow.

What questions should candidates always ask in an interview?Its good when candidates ask about opportunities for growth — for themselves and for the organization. How do we see the organization growing in the near future? What are we excited about? It shows that theyre invested and are thinking about us for more than just a short-term experience.

What questions should they never ask?Questions that they should know the answers to walking in. We do expect a basic understanding of our mission, goals, and values as an organization. I also dont think its a good use of time to ask your interviewer how they came to Planned Parenthood or how they got their start. People just starting out tend to ask this more often. While its a great question, you want to focus this time on you, not us. Save the questions on my career path for an informational interview. You should spend the limited time you have with us showing us why you are best for this job.

Is it OK to bring up salary? I would say its certainly fine to ask about the salary, but I would save any negotiating until theres an offer on the table. It may work to your benefit to ask for a range rather than an exact number — you may be undervaluing yourself without realizing it.

Whats a mistake people make in interviews all the time and dont know it? Oftentimes candidates are nervous or arent sure where to start, and theyll give us a detailed account of their experiences. Weve seen the résumé and know how it reads. We want them to show us how the bullets on their résumé will manifest if hired and to convince us that they are the right person for the position that will add value to the organization. I think not having any questions for us is also a mistake. It comes across as incurious.

Whats the most memorable thing anyones done in an interview that landed him or her the job? One new graduate talked about how she went above and beyond to raise funds for a cause that was important to her. She not only raised the necessary money, but she engaged her entire class in support. We love that type of conviction.
