An expert in hiring people at MST Solutions named Tejal Wagadia says her favorite way to get an honest answer is to ask about a time when someone failed, made a mistake, or had a disagreement with a coworker.

“We all fail, have problems, and make mistakes,” she said, adding that what she wants to know from the answer is if the candidate is telling the truth and if they learned from the experience.

Don’t claim to be perfect. Wagadia said not remembering the last time you made a mistake is a red flag for her.

“That means they either don’t know they’ve done something wrong because they are unaware or can’t think about it, or they do know but are lying to make themselves look good.” Which tells me they could potentially lie in the future about something else,” she said.
