I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at BNSF Railway (New York, NY) in Jan 2018

Interview

So I was living in Memphis at the time. My wife had moved to Nebraska already and I had an invite to the hiring event in omaha. They contacted me roughly a week before it took place. So I rushed to buy a plane ticket and 2 nights in a hotel to make the trip. I also took an unpaid day at my job to make it. Roughly $1200 bucks lost. So I got there 30 minutes early. They were hiring for 6 positions and 8 of us we’re in the room. Mostly men either 50+ years old or over weight. The went over basically everything you needed to know. Then came the interviews. I being the honest person I am admitted to being terminated from a job over 4 years ago. After admitting this it’s as if they saw me as a criminal. They didn’t give me a fair shot at all. I’ve applied 8 times over 4 years and have been denied everytime. This company is losing good employees over politics. IN THE RAILROAD IT’S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW BUT WHO YOU KNOW. don’t waste your time on BNSF!

Track Laborer Interview

Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at BNSF Railway (Onalaska, WI) in Apr 2015

Interview

The morning started out with an overview of the position, to include specific job tasks, expectations, opportunities for advancement, etc. Lasted about 1-2 hours and was very informative. After the overview, all applicants were lined up to give a hair sample for a drug screen. This is where I ran into problems. WARNING: IF YOU ARE BALD, YOU BETTER HAVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF “BODY” HAIR TO PROVIDE. I am a swimmer and a gym rat… I do not like looking like a bear. I offered eyebrow hair, chest hair, arm hair but was turned away because it would not provide enough for their test requirement. I was turned away because I shave my head and “man-scape”. I explained to the HR staff on site, that I am career active duty military and get drug tested regularly… made no difference. So if you go to a BNSF interview… better have some hair to give. They use a scissors to get a required 50mg sample. I am putting this out there for all others because there were no specifics about any of this prior to my arrival at the interview. The only guidance given was “be prepared to give a hair sample”.

Interview Questions

  • Can you provide a hair sample for drug screening?
