There are a few crucial considerations to make when interviewing for a job at Year Up. Be ready to discuss your reasons for wanting to work with Year Up and what you believe you could bring to the company when answering questions about those topics first. Second, be prepared to talk about any previous experience you have in customer service or other human-facing positions, as well as your experience working with young adults from various backgrounds. Last but not least, be sure to prepare some questions of your own to ask the interviewer; doing so will demonstrate your sincere interest in the job and the company.

Year Ups internship requirements state that you must be at least 18 years old before the start of your internship. This is due to the fact that adult and child employment laws differ. If your 18th birthday falls before the beginning of the internship, you are eligible to apply and enroll in the program at age 17. Maximum age limit: 29 years old. Upon acceptance into the program, you cannot be older than 29. As long as you are no older than 29 when you are accepted, you may turn 30 during the 12-month program.

While attending Year Up, many students hold down part-time jobs on the weekends or in the evenings. It can be challenging to balance, but it’s possible. Although a full-time job cannot be replaced by the educational stipend you can earn, it will help you pay for some of your essential expenses. Our student services staff can assist you in creating a plan that will enable your success at Year Up and guarantee you can pay your bills if you are concerned about your income. We expect you to try your best, but it also isn’t something you should worry about. In some places, we use a basic academic assessment to see where you’re starting. If we know where you are, we can better support you. If you didn’t receive “good” grades in high school, that’s okay. There are many different types of assessments used in education; with this one, we simply want to better understand your needs.

I spoke with two students who were in the middle of internships at regional tech firms in the Bay Area. We went through a lengthy list of inquiries that they were ready to respond to. Then I came up with a few of my own questions, such as “Why should I hire you?” and “What sets you apart from the other candidates I might interview?”

These students were amazing and very well prepared. Everything from the firm handshake to the direct eye contact to the succinct explanations of their strengths, weaknesses, and reasons why I should “hire them” was excellent. They appeared to be more ready than some seasoned professionals I’ve spoken with in the past about real job openings.

I went into my support job at LinkedIn the following day eager to assist others and address any issues that might arise. If I’m the only Salesforce Administrator a Sales Representative encounters, I want it to be a positive and seamless encounter. Similarly, the YearUp students had only 30 minutes to make an impression on me, leave me with a positive impression, and respond to my questions in a way that would enable me to decide whether I wanted to hire them or not. The students I met that day and how hard they are working to be successful and professionally prepared inspired me.

I left YearUp that afternoon feeling very emotional and reflective. I was incredibly appreciative of all the people who have mentored me and given me opportunities throughout my career. People who critiqued my resume and gave me advice on how to effectively respond to typical interview questions Some even showed me how to navigate difficult people. Those who stressed the value of my resourcefulness in addition to my technical expertise also claimed that I would be unstoppable if I could improve my emotional intelligence. Even though the interviews were intended to aid those amazing students, I nonetheless benefited in incredibly useful, unexpected, and wonderful ways.
