Looking back, I can say that the Sterling Scholar Program not only assisted me in obtaining a full scholarship to BYU, but also provided me with access to countless networks and doors. It was undoubtedly a difficult process that required years of dedication and planning, but all the effort and interviewing paid off when they announced my name on stage. ”.

Looking back, the rehearsal for the final awards ceremony stands out as the highlight of the Sterling Scholar process. I was seated in the school auditorium with the other English Sterling Scholar candidates. We were all very anxious, so in order to relax, we started a conversation. We discussed our favorite books, our future plans, and our general way of living. Being surrounded by so many talented and genuinely good people was an amazing experience. Being among them made me feel incredibly honored and humble, and it is still my favorite memory.

The judges will have access to nominees’ electronic portfolios a few days prior to the Sterling Scholar competition. It is advised that judges read the electronic portfolios first before deciding on preliminary scores. Score sheets should be reviewed after the 10-minute interviews, and new values should be assigned. Each judge should operate independently in this regard, but the panel of judges chooses the finalists, runners-up, and winners. Judges must not allow ties, co-winners, or additional finalists.

Judges will have access to supplies for using the aforementioned formula. NO ONE SHOULD EVER GET A HOLD OF ANY JUDGING SHEETS, SCORES, OR NOTES. Please turn in all documentation detailing individual students’ grades to the usher assigned to your room. Judges worksheets will be destroyed. Up until the official announcements, the competition’s results should be kept private and sealed in an envelope.

Judges are advised to use this formula, but it is advised that they do so with caution, prudence, and wisdom. Total scores should not be disclosed. Finalists should not be ranked but arranged in alphabetical order. The two runners-up ought to be listed alphabetically rather than by score or rank.

ALL DECISIONS OF THE JUDGES ARE FINAL. Absent unequivocal evidence of fraud or abuse, representatives from the Deseret News, KSL Television, SEDC, or the Southwest Sterling Scholar Committee will not overturn a judge’s decision. The Southwest Sterling Scholar Committee reserves the right to modify the interview judging process and will, as necessary, notify nominees (schools).
