Financial need is one of many criteria used by the Terry Foundation to choose which students will receive scholarships. Every student we interview is expected to perform well in college and was selected for an interview by his or her university because the institution thinks the student has the aptitude and drive to succeed.
In terms of financial need, you should be prepared to discuss with the interview panel your household financial circumstances. To help you with this, the Terry Foundation requires you to complete the online Terry Financial Data Form. The link to the online form is provided in the email invitation to interview. The panel chair will review your completed form during the interview , and you will discuss its contents with your panel. Therefore, you should be as familiar as you can with your family’s income and asset value figures shown on both your application and the Terry Financial Data Form. You will be asked about any other grants or scholarships you expect to receive. You will also be asked for the current balances of any funds or bank accounts that have been set aside either by your family or others to provide financial support for your college education. This includes savings accounts or other college savings accounts like 529 plans or the Texas Tomorrow Fund.

Tell us about your interview for the Terry Scholarship.
My mom and I arrived at the parking garage, and as we watched a few students enter the building, that was the moment I remember the most. The first thing I noticed about them was their nice suits, which made me remember that my blazer was two sizes too small. My mom noticed their enthusiasm. At that time, I felt insignificant and undeserving of being there. The interview panel subsequently questioned me regarding the significance of the scholarship for me. Everyone in my hometown who didn’t consider attending college as an option crossed my mind. I also recalled a girl in the grade above me who had won a sizable scholarship, and how that had demonstrated to me that residents of my hometown have limitless potential. I stated in the interview that I wished to be someone who could encourage others, particularly those from similar social and economic backgrounds, and show them that they are capable of amazing things.

What interested you in biomedical science?
I want to practice medicine. Growing up, I witnessed my parents put off seeking treatment for minor health issues because they lacked health insurance and feared the exorbitant out-of-pocket costs. My mom’s more serious health issues also made me more aware of the dangers that Americans without insurance face. S. Additionally, I come from a predominantly Hispanic town where I have witnessed how linguistic and cultural barriers can make it difficult to accurately translate information, which lowers the standard of care given. Change is necessary to address the problems that low-income communities and people of color face, and I am excited to be a part of the generation of medical professionals who will put new policies in place to provide our communities with better healthcare.
