Although it is completely optional, taking part in an interview is a fantastic way to help the admissions committee get to know you as a person and gives you the chance to ask questions in a one-on-one setting.

As part of our holistic admissions process at Syracuse University, the Office of Admissions offers optional personal interviews to all high school seniors and potential transfer students.

Why do you want to attend this university?

This question, which will almost certainly be asked during your admission interview and may be phrased slightly differently, such as “What made you choose this university?,” will test your familiarity with the institution and allow the interviewers to learn more about your motivations. Consider the qualities that make you and the school the ideal match for one another, as in a higher education love affair.

Don’t just mention how lovely the setting is or how the course “sounds good.” Give as many specific, well-thought-out justifications as you can, such as the department’s approach to your subject or whether it has particularly effective facilities for the course. Don’t mention anything that suggests you didn’t give your decision much thought, such as the cost or the nightlife.

Some universities demand an interview before allowing applicants to enroll as new students. If you’re not ready for it, this could come as a nasty surprise, especially if you get anxious in unfamiliar situations or around people in positions of authority. Although we’ve given you advice on how to get ready for your admissions interview, there will always be a degree of uncertainty because each one is different. All interviews are like this because it’s impossible to know in advance what the interviewer will ask you or how they will ask it. But if you show up with confidence, you’ll be able to deal with whatever comes your way. Here are some of the best ways to get ready because preparation is essential.

Have a close friend or family member prepare you for the admissions interview by asking you questions beforehand. Furthermore, it is strongly advised that you audio or videotape the process if at all possible so that you can learn to identify speech and body language patterns that you might want to address before entering. Since colleges typically recognize that this is your first interview ever, they won’t subject you to an interrogation process because nerves can cause stammers and fidgeting. However, they’ll be curious to learn more about you and interested in how much effort you put into the preparation.
