Question 7: “How would you handle a demanding – or in some cases, lazy – pet parent?”

This question came from a friend who is also a groomer. It’s a great one to think about before you go on any grooming interview. Throughout your career, you’ll encounter a wide variety of dogs and dog temperaments. But this is also true for people, too.

There are just as many peculiar people out there as there are peculiar dogs. While some people have high hopes for the groom, they don’t value your time or effort in meeting those hopes. Some people are lazy and won’t brush their dogs at home. They’ll only bring them in when their fur is a mess. Surprisingly, they will expect you to brush out every mat and save the long coat they want, even though they don’t do anything to keep it in good shape at home.

This can be a challenge when running a dog grooming business (or working for one). I recommend being very clear with the client on what you can accomplish during the allotted time. If needed, explain politely why something may not be possible. If you handle it this way, I think the client will be more willing to accept a reasonable outcome.

Moreover, you can educate clients on proper at-home care. Get them to help you take care of their dog. This can cut down on the number of mats in the coat. If you do this regularly and with kindness, your client might start helping you keep the coat at the right length and health.
