Students who receive an invitation may sign up for the opening ceremony. My advice is that this is a waste of time. There were roughly 400–500 students in the tent; I could be mistaken; they listened to a 10-minute speech from the president and director of admissions, munched on some small snacks, and then the program came to an end. I was astonished by the enormous number of students who were invited. When I signed up for the competition, I was unprepared for this, and I later learned that the opening ceremony had no advantages (i e. showing interest). Therefore, I would advise students to drive early in the morning for the actual competition, especially if they live in Georgia or are only a short drive away (3 hours or less, perhaps).

When invited to interview for specific scholarships (Tift was specifically mentioned) during the competition, that means an additional 15-20 minute interview for that scholarship. The majority of scholarships offered through the competition (with the exception of Tift, which is only $1000) will replace any merit grants already issued.

DD receives a 4000 annual stipend and the full cost of attendance as a Stamps Scholar. She is also a Tift Scholar, a Presidential Scholar, and a Service Scholar. For any of these, you must attend interviews in the fall. There are 30 Tift, 5 Stamps, 20 Service (4000), and 35 Presidential (full tuition). 200 people go to the weekend. Tift scholars are women. There are also engineering & music scholarships. Although D D was given a full music scholarship, he did not require it. I’ll be glad to answer questions.

I really liked the people at Mercer University, but I don’t think that is worth as much as it is in tuition, so how much are you willing to pay? I received a merit scholarship worth 18K at first, and then the 24K Jesse Mercer Scholarship. Because the scholarships could not be stacked, I only received $24,000. This would leave approx. 10K in tuition plus an additional 13K or so for meal plans and housing (which are necessities for students). As a result, I would be spending around $23,000 and possibly even more (transportation, other needs).

Students who missed the opening ceremony must check in the following day, and breakfast is served in the student dining halls. Then one will move to a large auditorium, which will eventually fill up. One can see that Mercer invited a large number of students from this point on. After an English professor gave a speech, students were sent to simulate classes. There are various class topics, but each student’s schedule specifies which one they must attend. My interests and major were in engineering, computer science, and information technology, but I was assigned to a class at Mercer that involved poetry analysis and was taught by a math professor. I found the class highly boring. Although the names of some other classes sounded much more interesting, I had to stick to my schedule.

The Presidential Scholars Program is available on an invite-only basis. Therefore, even if you are qualified, you might not be able to apply unless you receive an invitation. The most typical way that a student is invited to the general Presidential Scholars pathway is by receiving a high ACT or SAT score A Presidential Scholar partner organization or the Chief State School Officer can also nominate students.

For the arts pathway, students must demonstrate “academic achievement and talent in the visual, creative, or performing arts.” Additionally, students must participated in the National YoungArts Foundation’s nationwide YoungArts program.

Last but not least, students must demonstrate academic achievement in career and technical programs and be nominated for the CTE pathway by their state’s chief state school officer.

A student must finish the application after being invited to do so for the Presidential Scholars Program.

The application entails several components including:

The scholarship committee will evaluate students in each category—general, arts, and CTE—based on their academic performance, character traits, leadership, community service, and essays.

Unlike other scholarship programs, the U. S. Presidential Scholars Program does not award a monetary scholarship.

Instead, students selected as Presidential Scholars will receive a trip to Washington, D.C., with all expenses paid. C. and are honored at a special ceremony hosted by the White House with a medallion.

There are a ton of non-financial advantages that scholars receive in addition to the trip and the White House awards ceremony, such as:

  • Network with leaders: Gain access to important national and international figures, including government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people.
  • Experience Washington, D.C.: Opportunities to attend recitals, receptions and ceremonies held in their honor; and visit D.C. museums and monuments.
  • Meet accomplished peers: Gain the chance to exchange ideas with similarly motivated and accomplished peers, and to forge friendships that last a lifetime.”
  • In conclusion, even though students are not paid, the Presidential Scholars program is still very prestigious due to the recognition it brings and the networking opportunities it offers.
