Interviewer:Please describe your job title and primary duties. Lowe’s Employee:I was a sales associate in the lumber department. They have an indoor lumber yard with items like OSB, sheets of plywood, various types of decking, and similar things. When customers or contractors placed large orders for lumber, I was in charge of cutting wood and loading items onto the loading dock because I worked as a sales associate in the lumber facility. I was primary. I did a lot of manual labor. Being a younger associate, I was given a lot of the manual labor, but it was an excellent job. I enjoyed it, my duties there.
Lowe’s Employee: It was a pleasant working environment. Interviewer: How was the work environment? It’s very fast pace. At least in the lumber department, you don’t sit down the entirety of your shift. Although there are various factors, such as electrical and seasonal factors, it moves fairly quickly overall. You’re always moving. Shifts go by pretty quick. That’s one thing I really appreciated about it. I don’t know. The work environment is good. It was kind of cool because I was significantly younger than the typical associate there. I don’t know. I learned a lot. I believe that was a really great aspect of the job because there were so many knowledgeable people there. Overall, it was a great environment to work in.
Lowe’s Employee: My favorite aspect of working there is probably just the social aspect of it, the interviewer asked. You get to talk to a lot of people. You get to meet a lot of people. You can bring dogs into Lowe’s, one of the places where you are permitted to have them. They welcome dogs, so you frequently see these animals there. Many different people you see coming through are working on various projects, and they want to tell you about it. You are expected to assist them in building whatever they are working on, such as their deck or swing set, as an associate. I believe that the social component—sort of working with the customer and assisting them in finding what they want—is important.
Interviewer:Please describe the application and interview process. Lowe’s Employee: I went in for the application process after being referred by a friend. I completed an application and met with the HR representative there for the first time. We kind of talked. She invited me in for an interview because we were acquainted in the past. I met with her and a few of my coworkers who I would be working with in the lumberyard when I went in for an interview. We completed a mouth swab drug test before I underwent training with the other new hires, during which we explored the store to determine our roles and what matters to us and what doesn’t necessarily fall under our department’s purview. The training was excellent for that as well—just getting to know your mentor and determining the projects you’ll be working on.
Lowe’s Employee: A lot of it was based on team-oriented things. Interviewer: What questions did you ask during the job interview? There’s not a lot you can do on your own in the lumberyard. Since you’re working with large sheets of wood, there are a lot of team-oriented activities involved. The lumberyard was called that, and they asked me what leadership roles I had taken, whether I was a leader or a follower, and how I saw myself fitting into the group as a pro, a pro service associate. Just things like that. It was a lot team-oriented and leadership-oriented.
Interviewer: How did you learn that you got the job? Lowe’s Employee:I believe they offered me the position three days after my initial interview. I accepted the position, obviously. I think it was a week after they offered me the job that I went and started training. I had to fill out a few different forms regarding direct deposit and other similar things. The training is you wear red vests there. Initially, you’re not given a red vest. Once you’ve determined what you’re going to be doing, your capabilities, and other such things, you simply earn the red vest. Working your way up to where you’re initially going to be is just like a tier system.
What makes you stand out from the competition, the interviewer asks? A Lowe’s employee Just like I said, it’s a manual labor job. Many people dislike working those long hours, but I found it to be enjoyable. I figure I might as well do it while I can since I’m still young. I liked working primarily with my hands and clocking in and out of hours fairly quickly. I believe I put in a lot of effort throughout each of my shifts, which I believe showed in my work and, obviously, helped me land the job. I believe that was kind of what set me apart—just my willingness to work hard.
Lowe’s Employee: I would just say just be willing to work hard because they do treat their employees great. Interviewer: What other advice do you have for someone looking for employment? They have good benefits, good management. The training is great. It’s not an easy job, so all you need to be is willing to put in the effort. There’s a lot of manual labor. Being at a place like Lowe’s, where you interact with a variety of people, it is important to develop your interpersonal skills. This includes being able to converse with others as well as being willing to work as a team, get along with your coworkers, and communicate with customers to ensure they get what they need.
