Which certification do most CareerStep coding graduates pursue? Both the CPC and CCA exams have been successfully passed by graduates. Because the CPC exam offers a free retake and many of our students are active in their local AAPC chapters, more of our graduates take it.
The two organizations are different, and neither is superior to the other. Which one is better, AHIMA or AAPC? You may decide you prefer one organization over the other after comparing the differences between what each offers as a member and the certification exams themselves (in terms of format, cost, and the types of questions).
I eventually want to work as an inpatient coder. Which test better reflects my objectives? Typically, entry-level coders start as outpatient coders. When an outpatient coder gains more onsite experience, they frequently transition into inpatient coding, but inpatient coding is typically regarded as a more experienced and advanced level of coding. As a result, there are no credentials for entry-level positions that demonstrate a thorough understanding of inpatient coding. The majority of employers will anticipate that you will start out as an outpatient coder, but if they know you have inpatient training as well, they might be more inclined to hire you with the intention of later cross-training you in inpatient coding. Because of this, obtaining either a CPC credential or a CCA credential will put you in a position to become certified as an outpatient coder first with the possibility of transitioning to inpatient training later as you accumulate more experience and other credentials
There are many credentials available through both AHIMA and AAPC that you can choose to pursue once you have had a few years of experience, but which credentials should I get? Because of this, we advise all of our program graduates to obtain certification as soon as possible after they graduate.
