The Top 20 California Closets Interview Questions and How to Ace Your Interview

Interviewing at California Closets? You’ll want to be prepared to answer their most commonly asked interview questions. As the leader in custom closet design and installation since 1978, California Closets has high standards when it comes to hiring new talent.

In this article we’ll dive into the top 20 questions you’re likely to encounter during your California Closets interview along with tips on how to craft winning responses. Whether you’re interviewing for a design sales, operations or management role, these strategies will help you stand out from the competition and land the job.

Overview of the California Closets Interview Process

The typical California Closets interview process consists of one or more telephone or video interviews followed by an in-person interview for promising candidates. Some applicants have reported taking personality or skills assessments during the hiring process as well.

Overall, the interview experience is described as professional and focused on assessing candidates’ qualifications, skills and cultural fit. However, some candidates felt there was a lack of follow-up communication after their interviews.

The time frame varies, with some applicants hearing back within a few weeks while others have waited longer for feedback. Preparation and fit seem to be key factors in moving forward successfully. We’ll highlight how you can showcase both throughout the interview process.

20 Common California Closets Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

Let’s dive into the top 20 most frequently asked questions during California Closets interviews:

1. Why do you want to work for California Closets?

This question is asked to assess your passion and fit for the company. The interviewer wants to know that you have researched California Closets and understand their mission and values.

  • In your response, convey your admiration for their commitment to customization, quality craftsmanship and exceptional service.
  • Highlight aspects of their culture and approach that resonate with you personally.
  • Share why their focus aligns well with your strengths, interests and career goals.

For example “I’m excited to work for California Closets because I’m inspired by your commitment to personalized design solutions that enhance your customers’ lives. Your consultative approach and attention to detail strongly align with my own customer-focused values and passion for craftsmanship. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute my skills in a culture that fosters creativity, collaboration and continuous improvement.”

2. What do you know about our company’s history and mission?

This question allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of California Closets’ origins and guiding principles. Thorough research is key.

In your response:

  • Provide an overview of when the company was founded, by whom and how it has grown over the decades.
  • Discuss their commitment to innovation, quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Share your understanding of their goals and priorities as an organization.

For example “California Closets was founded in 1978 by a husband and wife team who saw a need for customized storage solutions. Based on the principles of quality, service and innovative design, you’ve grown from one showroom into the industry leader with over 100 locations across North America and Europe. Your mission focuses on delivering an exceptional client experience through your unique SpacePlanningTM process and innovative storage systems. Attention to detail and a commitment to sustainability are also core values that I really appreciate and connect with.”

3. Why are you leaving your current job?

This question aims to uncover if there are any red flags related to your reason for changing roles. Be honest but positive about your response.

Some effective strategies include:

  • Stating you are seeking greater opportunities for growth and development.
  • Citing that you’ve gone as far as you can in your current position.
  • Explaining that you are looking for a role more aligned with your skills and interests.
  • Emphasizing your respect for your current employer but feel ready for a new challenge.

Just avoid negativity or blaming your employer. Keep the focus on your own career path and goals.

4. What are your greatest strengths?

This is your chance to highlight 2-3 qualities or skills that would make you an asset in this role. Choose strengths that directly relate to the position and back each one up with a brief example.

Some strengths to consider highlighting:

  • Creativity
  • Communication skills
  • Collaboration
  • Attention to detail
  • Customer-focused
  • Problem-solving

For example: “A few of my greatest strengths are creative problem-solving, collaboration and communication. For instance, in a recent kitchen renovation project, I helped the clients maximize their limited space by proposing an innovative split-level island design that met their aesthetic and functional needs. This required collaborating closely across our design and installation teams and maintaining frequent client communication to bring the vision to life.”

5. What is your greatest weakness?

The key here is to choose a minor weakness that you have actively worked to improve. Then demonstrate the steps you’ve taken to manage and overcome your weakness.

For example: “In the past, I’ve struggled with time management and prioritizing tasks, especially when juggling multiple projects. However, I’ve implemented strategies like creating detailed project plans, setting reminders for deadlines and check-ins, and avoiding multitasking which have really helped me overcome this hurdle. I’ve become much more organized and efficient in my work, ensuring projects stay on track.”

6. How do you handle a difficult client?

California Closets wants to know you can deal with challenging clients professionally and leave them satisfied. Share your strategies for active listening, empathy and conflict resolution.

In your response, provide an example that demonstrates:

  • Listening without judgment to understand the client’s viewpoint
  • Remaining calm and finding common ground
  • Presenting solutions tailored to address their concerns
  • Following up to ensure their satisfaction

For example: “When faced with a difficult client, I make it a priority to hear them out and get to the root of their frustrations. I ask thoughtful questions and focus on finding a mutually beneficial solution, not on proving who is right or wrong. For example, when a client was unhappy with a design we created, I worked collaboratively with them to understand their aesthetic and make tweaks until we landed on a plan they were thrilled with. This experience taught me how effective clear communication and patience can be for resolving conflicts.”

7. How do you ensure quality control throughout the design process?

This question tests your attention to detail and process orientation. Discuss your methods for setting clear expectations, checkpoints and measurements to uphold quality across projects.

In your response, touch on:

  • Reviewing project requirements thoroughly at the onset
  • Establishing well-defined quality criteria and processes
  • Implementing systems and tools to monitor progress and detect issues
  • Conducting rigorous reviews at each milestone
  • Making swift corrections when needed
  • Reporting on quality metrics to stakeholders

For example: “To maintain excellent quality control, I utilize project management tools to establish quality checkpoints throughout each phase of the design process. For example, upon receiving the project brief, I will review all requirements and start a checklist to track progress against key deliverables. As we reach design milestones, I conduct internal reviews to catch any errors early on. I also request the client’s feedback regularly to ensure we’re aligning with their vision. This rigorous approach helps me identify potential quality issues quickly so they can be remediated before negatively impacting the final outcome.”

8. Tell me about a time you successfully handled a difficult installation or construction issue. What was the outcome?

This behavioral question allows you to demonstrate your technical skills and grace under pressure. Use the STAR method – explain the Situation, Task, Action you took and the Result.

Key points to cover:

  • Describe the specific installation challenge you faced.
  • Detail the systematic steps you took to diagnose and address the issue.
  • Emphasize any innovative or creative problem-solving.
  • Share quantifiable results and metrics that showcase the success of your approach.

For example: “On a recent job, we encountered a major issue where a custom closet unit would not fit within the client’s challenging angled wall. Rather than scrap the whole design, I methodically evaluated the measurements and limitations. I then came up with a novel solution to detach the unit into two pieces that could be independently installed and seamlessly blended into the space. The client was thrilled that we were able to overcome this obstacle. We completed the installation on schedule and under budget despite the unexpected complication.”

9. How do you stay motivated when faced with rejection?

Sales roles at California Closets involve hearing “no” frequently. This question reveals your resilience, positive attitude and strategies for bouncing back after rejection.

In your response, share:

  • Your mindset for learning and improving from every “no”.
  • How you maintain self-motivation through preparation and focusing on controllable factors.
  • Tactics you use like positive self-talk, relying on your support system, finding small wins.

For example: “I view rejection as an opportunity to grow. While rejection is never easy, it helps me re-evaluate my approach to identify areas for improvement. I try to stay positive by reminding myself that a ‘no’ simply brings me closer to the next ‘yes.’ Preparing thoroughly for each sales interaction also boosts my confidence to keep trying. Most importantly, I focus on factors within my control, like honing my product knowledge an

How do I care for my closet storage system?

A mild, non-oily cleaner will get rid of dust and smudges for everyday cleaning. A low-abrasive cleaner can get rid of tougher marks. Please see our guide on How to Clean Your Closet System for more information on how to clean different finishes and parts.

How long does installation take?

How long the installation takes will depend on how complicated the design is, how big the space is, and whether you have more than one design put up. However, most installations are completed within one day.

How many drawer styles are available?

Many of the drawer styles we offer are similar to our door styles. We can fit a wide range of styles, from traditional and transitional to modern and contemporary. This is possible because we offer many materials and finishes. Click here to get more information on our door and drawer styles.

How many finishes are available?

We have three types of finishes: classic flat finishes, like white or ivory; our own Lago textured wood grains, which are inspired by Italy; and Tesoro textured finishes, which are also from Italy. The available colors of these specific finishes will vary by location. Click here to learn more about the variety of colors and finishes we offer.

How much does installation cost?

Installation is included in the cost of your system.

Do your systems mount to the wall or sit on the floor?

Every California Closets custom system is designed and cut to order, and then affixed to the wall. We have a modern “off-the-floor” style that is installed, as well as a style that looks like custom built-in furniture with toe kicks and top crown molding that is also installed. Your professional design consultant will walk you through our custom options.

Can you supply doors for my closet?

We offer a variety of sliding door options; however, we do not supply bifold or interior closet doors. Click here to view our sliding door options.

Do I have to remove the original shelves and closet rods before installation can occur?

Do I need to remove carpet or tile before you can install?

You do not need to remove carpet or tile where your system will be installed. Many of our independently-owned locations also provide tear out and painting services. Check with your California Closets designer to determine if that service is available in your area.

Do you sell parts to do it yourself?

Do your products come with a warranty?

Yes, our products come with a limited lifetime warranty. Click here to view the details of our warranty.

What are your closets made of?

All of California Closets’ boards are made with laminated composite, which is made with recycled wood fibers. All of our finishes are CARB compliant, which means they meet certain rules for emissions and are safe for the environment. As an alternative to wood, our board has several advantages. For example, it is made from recycled wood fibers, which helps reduce the amount of waste in the environment. It allows us to not use raw resources, as with solid wood. Because it’s made from recycled wood fiber, it complies with LEED® credit for recycled content. We can give it different finishes and textures that you can’t get with solid wood because it’s laminated.

What is the maximum height for a closet solution?

A closet with a continuous wall can go up to 108 inches high, but there are many ways to stack and design the system so that it can go much higher. Please talk to your design consultant for further details and suggestions.

What is your return policy?

Due to the custom nature of our products, we do not offer returns. We do want you to contact Customer Service if you are unhappy with your system in any way, though, so we can fix it.

Where are your closets made?

All of our closets are manufactured locally or regionally. Currently, our largest manufacturing facility is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Will California Closets deliver to my home?

Yes, our expert installation technicians will deliver your custom system to your home and install it for you.

What is the maximum length for a continuous shelf or closet rod?

What do I need to do to prepare my space for installation?

You will need to clear any belongings out of your space. See our guide on How to Prepare for an Installation for detailed information on this process.

What does “dovetailed drawer boxes” mean?

Dovetailed drawer boxes are drawers that are made with dovetail joints. Each corner of the drawer has a dovetail joint. These joints fit together like puzzle pieces to make a strong, long-lasting connection that doesn’t need mechanical fasteners.

What does “push-to-open” mean?

Push-to-open refers to door or cabinet fronts without knobs that open when pushed in a particular location (e. g. the top left or right corner of the door front).

What does “soft-close” mean?

Drawers with soft close technology don’t slam shut — they close automatically with a gentle push.

What does “undermount slides” mean?

Undermount slides refers to the hardware mounted to the bottom side of a drawer. These slides make it easy for drawers to open and close. They can hold more weight and give you more support than side mount slides. Why should I buy custom storage solution from California Closets?

We’re proud at California Closets to be able to make custom home storage that fits your needs perfectly. California Closets’ systems are made with high-quality materials and come in a range of finishes. They can be easily installed in any room of your house.

What kind of experience do your design consultants have?

Our design consultants all have a good sense of style and know a lot about California Closets’ products, including how to use them in different situations to get the best results. On average, our design consultants have about three to four years of design experience before joining California Closets. When someone joins the California Closets team, they go through a long six-week training program. Our own CAD software is used in part of the training program. It gives you a unique 3D image of your space before it’s finished. Even though our design consultants come from different places, they all want the same thing: to make sure their clients get new and exciting spaces for their homes that will make their lives easier and more peaceful.

When will I see the design for my space?

It depends on how complicated your design is. Your design consultant might be able to show you a 3-D virtual walk-through of your space at the end of the consultation, or it might take them a few days to finish it. The design consultant will keep your schedule in mind as they plan your space and make sure it gets done quickly if that’s what you need. After the 3D rendering is done, you and your design consultant will work together to finalize all the design details, like the finishes, accessories, and accents. For the final design review, we suggest that you go to the showroom with your design consultant. That way, you can see all of the finishes and accessories in person before you make your final choices.

Are your systems re-adjustable? Can I change my design down the road if need be?

Some parts of our systems, like shelf height, specialty racks, and where the hanging rod goes, can be changed after they are installed. People like these choices for kids’ rooms because they let you change the system as your child grows and their needs change. We can also work with old California Closets designs to add new features or bring the style up to date with new hardware or accent colors for the doors and drawers. Contact your local California Closets for more details.

Can I send a design I got from another company and have you quote it?

Because California Closets’ products and systems are unique, we cannot base a quote on another retailer’s design. However, we are happy to work with you to create a new design based on our offerings. Based on your space’s exact measurements, our own CAD software will help us make a 3D picture of it.

Are you locally owned or a franchise?

California Closets is the best custom storage franchise system in the world. It has locations in the US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, both franchised and owned by the company. All of these locations are either privately owned and run or have a general manager whose job it is to give customers a great experience.

How long will a design consultation take?

Your consultation will take approximately 90 minutes. Depending on the complexity of the project, your consultation may be shorter or longer than 90 minutes. Please let us know when you make your appointment if you are short on time, and we will do our best to meet your needs.

When are your design consultants available to meet with me?

What is the process of getting a custom storage system from California Closets?

First, you’ll have a free consultation with a design consultant in your own home. During this time, he or she will listen to your needs, look at the space(s) where you want to install a California Closets system, and take measurements. If you’d like to start the design process with a meeting at the California Closets showroom closest to you, that can also be set up.

The design consultant will work with you to make a design that fits your style, needs, and budget. Our own computer-aided design (CAD) software will then be used to design your system, and a detailed 3-D rendering will be made to show you what your new space will look like. It depends on how complicated the design(s) are if this is done at the first meeting or at a follow-up meeting.

You’ll also be able to go to the California Closets showroom closest to you to see the finishes, accessories, and accents that are available for your custom design. On installation day, one of our seasoned installers will install your new system in your home. The installer will treat your space and home as if they were their own while they are working on them. Once your new system is set up, the technician will show you how to adjust any parts that can be adjusted.
