Basically, they want to know if you have ever written code for a serial peripheral. This is a good interview question to see if someone is a complete beginner.
When you do things the “old school” way, you would set up an rx interrupt. If data can come in at odd times and we can’t lose it, then an interrupt is pretty much the only way to go. Especially if there are plans to support different baudrates as well.
Once that is done, the filter check can be put inside the ISR (except in CAN, where hardware does these checks). And from there on, valid data is passed on to a software ring buffer. This cuts down on the time it takes to run inside the ISR and fixes the issue of hardware buffers being too small at the same time. Data re-entrancy protection preferably needs to be carried out by the ring buffer code.
The modern way would rather be to avoid interrupts and instead use DMA, if the microcontroller supports it. This offloads the CPU from having to deal with the frequent rx interrupts. When the buffer is full, we can just switch the DMA buffer target address and work with the raw buffer from there. If we can’t swap DMA buffer addresses for some reason, we could also just make a rough copy of the whole DMA buffer somewhere else.
