40th Birthday Interview: What is my inspiration? Do I want children? What is the purpose of life?

There are some societal expectations for you at 40, in my opinion. Like you’re supposed to buy a lot of frozen vegetables in order to save money.

Sadly, I discovered as I was finishing this post that my close friend’s father died from the coronavirus.

So for my 40th birthday, I interviewed myself. I combined questions I had for myself with questions my kids and Cindy had for me to create a list of questions.

I’ve found that writing has helped me connect with people, accept my mortality, accept my health conditions, and demystify myself for my children.

Recently, I found a prayer card for my grandfather. He died 9 years ago. I miss him. I understand how much of a mystery he will always be to me. The difficulty of living with questions that only the dead can answer may be the hardest aspect of life—how many questions I never got to ask him.

Turning 40 is a milestone in anyones life. It’s a special time in one’s life when they can look back and see everything they’ve accomplished as well as look forward and think about the joys life still has to offer. The best way to celebrate turning 40 is with loved ones who have known you for a long time and who value the splendor and beauty of your journey. Filling out a birthday questionnaire is a well-liked game at 40th birthday celebrations. As a way to honor the memories that everyone has shared, partygoers are asked to respond to a list of questions about the guest of honor.

Pose inquiries that reveal the honoree’s creative and risk-taking side. For instance: Joan, if she had not needed money, would have worked as a “, “Jessies children are unaware that she has a tattoo of a,” “Does Judy really attend knitting class when she tells her children she’s going there?” ?”.

Ask questions that reflect the guest of honors family values. Ask the honoree about their loved ones to show them how fortunate they are to be a part of a caring family if they are married and/or have children. Ask questions to remind the honored guest of the richness and humor of typical family life, such as “What song was playing the first time Danny kissed Debbie?” “What kind of cake did they serve at their wedding?” “What was Mark cooking for Brenda the first time the fire department was called to their home?” “What company was Jessie working for when she met the CEO without realizing she had applesauce in her hair.”

Ask the honoree questions that will make them feel like they have accomplished a lot in their first 40 years. Being 40 can be a downbeat birthday because it’s the time when people consider how their childhood aspirations have changed into their adult realities. Include questions that highlight the honoree’s accomplishments, such as “What was John’s college GPA?” or “Where was Jean’s first article published?” or “How old was Maria when she got her first promotion?” or “How much was the rent in Jill’s first apartment?” or “How many times has Barbara flown to Paris?” The answers will serve to remind the honoree to feel proud of all the personal goals they’ve achieved thus far.

Ask questions with answers that will cause good-natured laughter. The best questionnaire questions for a 40th birthday party keep the atmosphere light and fun. Ask questions about embarrassing memories, and outrageously fun times. Ask the honoree about their first or worst experience drinking too much, their funniest moments, or their questionable choice in clothing and hairstyle. Nothing ruins a 40th birthday celebration faster than revealing secrets that weren’t meant to be revealed or humiliating the guest of honor with excessive teasing, so make sure to keep the questions lighthearted and humorous rather than offensive or too revealing.

Well tomorrow is my birthday. Many people celebrate their birthday as a special day to feel honored. I’m not sure if it’s because I spent a significant portion of my adolescence and twenties without attending parties, and my 21st birthday was so significant that no one even said happy birthday to me (this was before Facebook), and I ate Subway by myself – this is a true story – I was a bit of a loner, but there were other, more important reasons I dreaded this day. Being an overachiever, I would consider my plans, goals, and current situation each year. Naturally, I had fallen short of my goals and would spend the days leading up to the big day thinking about all the ways I could have improved. There was always more I wished I had accomplished: I could have studied or worked more diligently, spent more time on side projects, or read more books. I experienced a very dark and depressing depression on the days leading up to and following February 17th of last year, despite being surrounded by people who love me (a stark contrast from the me of 10 years ago). I started looking into ways to make my birthday this year into something positive a few days ago as my yearly depression began to set in. Even though I should be finishing my new leader series or getting started on the new interview series idea I’ve been mulling over, I am rather proud of what I came up with and thought I would share it all with you.

We’ve all heard of time capsules, but instead of creating one, I chose to respond to a series of questions to create a letter to myself that I can enclose and read in the future. Though I haven’t quite worked out the specifics, I was thinking of a nice round number like 5-10 years in the future. In order to have something to look forward to reading on my birthday in five to ten years, I will therefore sit down tomorrow night and write out answers to each of these questions. Here are the questions that I intend to address in my letter:
