After the phone call, I went ahead and finished the project using the optimization we discussed, but I soon received an email stating that they were not interested in moving forward.
The conversation’s tone changed as I struggled to think of an optimization during that period. She shifted from being positive to attempting to move this along quickly. She basically asked me to stop where I was and asked if I had any more questions about five minutes before the interview was supposed to end, which was to be expected.
She asked if there were any optimizations to reduce the solution I had developed from O(n2) during the coding portion of the interview. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out an optimization, and I stumbled around for a while, but I eventually found one closer to O(nlogn).
Sucks. You never actually know the reason I guess. I don’t know what caused it, but it seems pretty obvious to me that speed was the issue. Oh well.
Since there are many tech companies in the Boston area, I am not concerned about receiving an offer in the end. But I discovered that Twitter, in particular, demands that you act quickly. I’m assuming that’s why they decided against proceeding.
I saw that Twitter was hiring fall interns, and if I applied, I thought I might seriously think about skipping a semester.
