Testing software to ensure it works as it’s supposed to is vital for a successful software engineer. As an interviewer, you’ll want to make sure that your software engineer candidate is capable of running basic testing to make sure they do their coding correctly. It’s important for the candidate to both understand the intricacies of the testing and to be able to explain how the testing works to someone who may or may not have a background in software engineering. When the candidate responds, look for an answer that:

  • Is straightforward and easy for you to understand
  • outlines the differences between the two types of testing and the roles that will most likely use each one.
  • cites an illustration of how the subject might apply the testing to their work for your company.

Phase 2: Online Technical Interview – I

This interview was conducted in two parts.

  • Theory-based questions – The interviewers asked Riham a few basic database questions such as database constraints, normalization, denormalization, the difference between primary key and unique key, whether a unique key could be a foreign key, and so on. Riham was able to answer those questions correctly and so, the interviewers asked him some intermediate database questions such as transaction, ACID properties, isolation, indexing and types, SQL injection, and so on.
  • SQL based questions – The interviewers gave Riham two SQL problems to solve on the Oracle HR schema. These problems were based on the JOIN clause. Riham, at some point, was facing some errors, and on noticing that, the interviewers started providing hints to him. Afterward, Riham successfully solved both problems.
  • Riham took a significant amount of preparation for this round. He tackled the theory portion by using resources from his university’s database course. He also watched a number of YouTube videos to comprehend more complex theories. Additionally, in order to prepare for SQL, he practiced on the HackerRank and Oracle Live SQL platforms.
