Since our recent posts about Admin and Developer Interviews went over well, it’s time for us to post about Consultant Interviews! The Salesforce Consultant position is a natural next step for admins who want to move up in their careers or for IT pros who want to move their skills to an industry with a lot of growth.
We tried to make this post’s questions similar to the kinds of questions you might get in a real interview. There are both technical and less serious questions. Because some of these answers can mean a lot of different things, we’ll give you a list of possible answers.
Landing a job as a senior functional consultant takes thorough preparation and knowledge of what to expect in the interview process. Senior functional consultants work closely with clients to understand their business needs and configure software systems like ERPs to support those needs. The interview will assess both your functional knowledge and your ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
In this article, we’ll look at some of the most commonly asked senior functional consultant interview questions, along with sample answers to help you ace your next interview.
Why Interviewers Ask About Your Reason for Leaving
Interviewers almost always ask candidates why they are leaving their current job. This helps them figure out what drives you and if the new job fits with your goals.
For this question, share a positive reason focused on growth. For example:
- “I’ve learned a tremendous amount in my current role, but I’m ready to take on more responsibility and leadership as a senior consultant.”
- “While I’ve enjoyed my time at my current company, this opportunity is better aligned with my long-term career goals.”
Shift the focus to the positives of the new job rather than negatives of your current role, Demonstrate maturity and avoid bad-mouthing your employer
How ERPs Like SAP Generate Requirements
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have built-in processes for generating requirements based on the client’s business needs. Here are some common ways requirement generation happens:
-
Gathering information from key users The consultant will conduct interviews and workshops with department stakeholders to understand pain points and business objectives These help shape technical requirements
-
Mapping business processes The consultant maps the client’s current business processes, identifies inefficiencies, and determines requirements to optimize workflows
-
Analyzing current systems: The legacy software landscape is reviewed to see how the new ERP can enhance or replace those systems and meet needs.
-
Reviewing out-of-the-box functionality: ERP systems have extensive built-in functionality. Discussing options with the client generates ideas for configuration requirements.
-
Prototyping: Mock-ups and prototypes can help end-users conceptualize requirements and provide feedback.
The key is constant two-way communication between consultant and client to turn business needs into ERP configuration requirements tailored to the organization.
Articulating Your 5-Year Plan
Interviewers want to know you have ambition and career goals. However, 5-year plans can change, so focus on your continued growth and development. For example:
-
“In the next 5 years, I see myself becoming an expert in ERP implementation for manufacturing firms. I hope to be leading projects and mentoring junior consultants.”
-
“I want to continue expanding my functional knowledge and technical skills. I’d love to move into a senior manager role and make broader impacts through organizational leadership.”
Avoid naming specific job titles or promotions, since these depend on many unpredictable factors. Demonstrate your commitment to learning, leadership growth, and professional challenges.
Explaining GST Processes for STO Scenarios
Goods and Services Tax (GST) has specific implications in stock transfer order (STO) scenarios between entities under the same organizational umbrella. Here’s an overview:
-
STO represents goods transfer between businesses within the same company. It is not a sales transaction.
-
However, under GST, the supplier and receiver entities are treated as distinct persons. STO is considered a deemed sales transaction.
-
The supplying entity issues a delivery challan and invoice to the receiving branch. They must pay taxes on the value of goods transferred.
-
The receiver branch can claim input tax credit on the IGST paid. The supply and receipt vouchers get reported in respective GSTR-1s.
-
The overall transaction is reconciled in the GSTR-3B of both parties. The supply entity shows it as “sales” and receiver shows corresponding “purchases”.
-
For intra-state transactions, CGST and SGST gets paid. For inter-state, IGST applies. Location of goods at the time of transfer determines whether CGST+SGST or IGST.
Understanding GST implications on internal transfers between company entities is crucial during ERP configuration for proper tax compliance.

Preparing Strong Examples and Stories
Supplementing your answers with specific examples and anecdotes is invaluable. For instance, when asked about requirement gathering, discuss a real scenario of how you worked with end-users at a client to turn their needs into functional specifications.
Have stories ready for these common behavioral interview questions:
- Tell me about a time you successfully managed stakeholders with competing priorities.
- When have you gone above and beyond to meet a project deadline?

What advice would you give to a customer (with little to no SF experience) who is planning to self-implement?
This question could be asked of you as a consultant if a client isn’t sure about paying a high day rate to work with you. There are a few different angles to take with this question:
- With all of its interconnected parts, Salesforce is a pretty complicated system. Almost certainly, something will not be set up correctly if you don’t know how all the parts should be used and how they can be expanded with custom features. This leads to two main problems: the system won’t be used correctly, and you might have to pay more money later to fix the work and make sure it’s done correctly.
- Consulting partners earn their living by knowing Salesforce inside out. But they have also worked with customers just like you for years, so they know what to do. This means that you not only get someone who knows Salesforce, but also someone who can give you advice on your business processes and the best way to implement based on years of experience.
- Along with feature and implementation experience, a Salesforce project will also include gathering requirements, training, and making the system easier for people to use. How well Salesforce is set up doesn’t matter if these three things aren’t in place.
1 What are the main limitations of using Salesforce Professional edition?
Salesforce Professional Edition can be thought of as a lighter edition of Salesforce Enterprise. There are some big differences between it and Enterprise that a Salesforce consultant would need to know about, even though it looks the same. It is very important to do this because you might need to suggest a different version of Salesforce if the needs are more complicated than usual.
The best way to explain the differences between Professional and Enterprise Edition, in a nutshell, is limitations. Professional Edition enforces limitations around automation, connectivity, and integrations. Because of these limitations, this also means that not all AppExchange Apps are available to Professional Edition users. Examples include Apex is unavailable, as well as limitations around sandboxes.
Professional Edition also doesn’t come with API access, which means that it can’t be used to connect to other systems.
