Received an email promptly and scheduled a phone interview. Nothing technical, just a discussion about my resume. I guess to see if I had common sense. Scheduled an on-site interview. I was given a homework assignment to complete and present to them during the on-site interview. Basically, they design a system and purposely leave it very broad and ambiguous to “see how we think.” They didn’t even say whether they wanted written word abstractions, code, or class designs. There were about 20 other people with me at the on-site interview in Seattle. It began with a discussion in groups and a very relaxed, open-forum setting. There was quite a large emphasis on the workplace culture. They also frequently discussed their desire to implement innovative ideas through an internship program (this was their first official internship in technology). Everything was laid-back and really exemplified the “start-up” culture that tech aspires to. The one-on-one interviews were easy. First one was with an engineer. Although we were all applying for different positions, they seemed unprepared and asked all of us a variety of questions. When I applied for an SWE internship, my academic background was questioned. We talked about caching, memory allocation, and other topics after I mentioned my lower-level C course. Never had a straight ‘trivia’ question asked. Never had to write code. Just discussed.
