Interviewing is one of our most crucial tasks, but it’s carried out very inconsistently throughout the company. Others, well, I guess they write good code or something else, are amazing interviewers.
Fortunately, interviewing can be learned, and it pays off to interview with insight no matter what you do or where you do it. A while back, the development team I oversee merged with a sizable team, and as part of that merger, a number of senior individuals—many of whom conduct As Appropriate (AA) interviews and all of whom regularly contributed to our interview loops—were added. I brought us together several times to talk about interviewing, to learn from each other, and to establish some standards on how we’re going to run our loops because talking about interviewing techniques and leveling is the best way to get in sync with it. I drafted some notes on what I believe are best practices for AAs, but they also apply to all interviewers, in advance of that meeting, and I usually send these whenever I join a team.
Some of these only apply to Microsoft, but many others are much more general. There is some internal Microsoft jargon used in the doc. For instance, “As Appropriate” (abbreviated “AA”) at Microsoft is the deciding factor in whether an offer will be made. However, most of what is here is company invariant.
