How to write a retirement letter as a teacher
If you’re getting close to retirement and need to make a formal letter of resignation, use the steps below to create one that works:
1. Address your letter
Give your principal or other designated school official your name and contact information before addressing your letter to them. Add the date before your formal salutation.
2. Lead with retirement
Start your letter’s introduction by stating your intention to retire and the date on which you plan to stop working. In this section of their retirement letter, some teachers opted to state how long they had been employed by the institution or the teaching profession overall.
3. Offer transition assistance
In order to help with the potential interviewing, hiring, and training of their replacement teacher during their final year of employment, retiring teachers are accustomed to providing support and assistance. Make an offer in the letter at this point if you’re interested in doing this.
4. Thank the school
Gratitude for the assistance during your years of service to your principal and school This section can be as short or as long as you like. Most educators decide to include a few sentences or a paragraph in their writing about their time working as educators, but you can add more or less information as you see fit.
5. Ask for the next steps
Ask about the subsequent steps in your retirement in the closing paragraph of your retirement letter. You’ll probably need to fill out some paperwork and may need to send formal retirement requests to additional stakeholders depending on the particulars of your school or district.
6. Sign and send
Add your signature to the formal valediction after your final paragraph. You can then deliver your letter to your principal or the head of your school in hard copy or electronically by attaching it to an email.
What is a teacher retirement letter?
Teachers use a teacher retirement letter to inform their principal, and occasionally the superintendent of their school district or other stakeholders, about their impending retirement date. In order to give the educational institution time to find a replacement for their position before the start of the following school year, teachers typically submit these letters at the beginning of their final academic year. Teacher retirement letters frequently include a personal reflection on the teacher’s time in the classroom as well as information about their final day of employment prior to retirement.
