Viking Days have finally arrived, the choir is singing, doughnuts have taken over every building, and streamers are hanging from every ceiling. Shay Norris, a senior psychology and business major, and Katelyn Graber, a senior biology major, sat down for an exclusive interview with The Mirror.
Katelyn: It’s so humbling. The fact that students vote and participate in homecoming is just so sweet. With all of my friends there, it was a lot of fun. Given that many of us have been friends since our freshman year, this year’s group seemed especially unique.
Shay: It’s a big honor. I want to emphasize that although it is cheesy and traditional, all of the candidates are truly deserving. Some of the nicest men you will ever meet were among the really, really great guys we had up there. I consider it an honor that Viking Days can be celebrated by all.
K: I really love the parade. My mother and my two older sisters attended Augie as well, so they now visit each year. My sisters have kids of their own. The little kids are always so excited when I get to ride through the parade with them and meet up with them after it.
I enjoy Saturdays, the parade, and football games. It seems like one of those common occurrences where the mood becomes more upbeat and exciting wherever you are. You have a small celebration going on in addition to your normal life.
K: As a freshman, you’re kind of afraid to leave your room, so I wasn’t as involved that year. Although I was aware that it was a significant custom, my pride in Augustana increased every year. Therefore, I feel more a part of the Viking Days tradition now than I did before. I hope I can return to this large celebration as an alumna in the future.
S: Freshman year, I actually wasn’t too involved on campus. During my one semester of theatre, I spent most of my time in my room. Homecoming just kind of came and went. It just got cooler and cooler every year as I started to come out of my shell and meet more people. This year is just night and day in difference.
K: My advisor, Libby King, is pretty special to me. She’s a professor that everybody just loves. She is just so kind to every student and takes the time to get to know them all. She just has a really genuine interest in not only your academics but also student lives in general. I’ve gone to her to talk to her about my classes or what I need to do to get ready for the next semester, but I’ll also talk to her about my life. She’s a sweetie.
S: Bill [Rooker] is one of my favorite campus residents because he just makes everyone’s day better. He goes around and tells a joke everyday. The people serving the food, [too], like Ana [Campos]. It can be anyone, professor, student or friend. I just really respect everyone on campus like that.
K: I chose Augustana for a few reasons. I love the location. I love Sioux Falls, and it’s not too far from my hometown. Despite the fact that I don’t frequently go home, it’s nice to have that choice. I also loved the biology department. I met with Dr. Egland and was just astounded by his level of expertise as well as his kindness and concern for my life and my interests.
S: My family has some history here. My mother graduated from Augie in the distant past. I also have numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles who attended this institution. It’s always just kind of been there in my life. I was raised in Sioux Falls where I took swimming lessons at the Elmen, attended camps, and participated in scholarship programs. It’s always just felt like a familiar place. It’s home.
K: One of my main goals in life is excellence. A friend of mine frequently tells me that “excellence is not perfection.” Being at Augie challenges you, whether in your classes or in your social and extracurricular activities, but I believe that striving to do my best is something I always try to do.
S: I probably embody the community [value] best. Together with my fellow royalty, we just have so much going on. I just really enjoy getting involved, including everyone, and participating in enjoyable activities that bring everyone together.
K: I’m going to apply to a few PhD programs and Augie’s genetic counseling program. D programs in the fields of genetics or cellular biology would be more advantageous if one had aspirations of becoming a professor one day.
S: I’m hoping to enroll in graduate school to complete my [psychology] degree and perhaps use my business degree as well. I don’t know what the future holds, but we’ll just use this as a starting point and go with it.
K: You should try to get involved in something you did in high school that you are familiar with, but you should also try something new or something you thought you would never do. Get out of your comfort zone.
S: Wayne Gretsky, Michael Scott, and Shay Norris all stated that you always miss the shots you don’t take. Just be yourself.

Homecoming Court 72 Questions – Part 2
“I think what attracted me is like being able to be like…… probably noticed you know, because you’re the only one who’s up there with you right now and it’s super interactive,” says Jason Choe. ”.
Kimberly Skaggs– “I feel like I stay really involved in the school, so my sophomore year I was super involved with clubs, I did Key Club, HOSA, NHS, and Link Crew Club, and after sophomore year that made I want to stay even more involved so I joined link crew my junior and senior year. (President Senior Year) where I help with freshmen and help stay connected with them. And guide them towards what their high school experience should be like. I did cheer too and I was captain of the JV team my sophomore year and this year I’m one of the captains of the varsity team.¨
Reese Le: “Others take you so much more seriously (about winning) than you want to be, and because of that, it permits people to draw conclusions about your character from their perceptions of other courtroom participants. ”.
Ciera Duran: “I ran because I want to be as involved in the school as possible and I love being like a positive aspect of like Santiago High School and I want to represent my school in a positive way so as Homecoming queen I believe that you have to be like friendly, upbeat, positive.” I just want to spread positivity any way I can. ¨ .

The students at CWRU come across as nerdy when you speak to us because we are so passionate about what we are studying or participating in. When I become interested in something, I get very excited and just want to share it with everyone I talk to, so I definitely fit right into that “nerdy” world. I find it very comforting to know that I can engage in those animated, passionate discussions with people here on campus without worrying about being perceived as being too much of a “nerd.” ”.
Like many other new students, Gabby Pruchno came to Case Western Reserve from Iowa City in 2009 knowing very little about the campus. She therefore set out on a mission to learn everything she could about her new home. Pruchno was named homecoming queen on September 15, indicating that the campus has apparently learned more about her as well. 29.
Pruchno, a senior double majoring in nutrition and psychology, and minoring in film studies, has greatly increased her campus knowledge through her studies. But she has also expanded her social circle on campus by joining a number of organizations.
I believe that the populace is friendly, knowledgeable, and ambitious. Every day as I stroll around campus, the students here never cease to amaze me. I mentioned in my homecoming court interview that I love how “nerdy” this school is. “When the interviewers questioned me about why, I responded that passion is the key.
She said, “I don’t think I could have gotten these amazing leadership, philanthropy, service, and academic opportunities anywhere else than by being involved in my chapter.” A fantastic set of values that I try to live by every day were also instilled in me by Phi Mu. I have wonderful sisters who support me in my role as president and who helped me with everything related to homecoming. I get a lot of my courage, passion, and commitment from them. ”.

Taylor Mortensen: I had a suspicion because the girls are typically a very diverse group, so Given that I’m the cross country team captain and get along well with a lot of the other members, I assumed that maybe I’d get nominated. I call a lot of them friends. But I really had no idea because I would have assumed that a lot of the awesome girls in the grade would be on it.
Michael Miller: I wouldn’t object in particular, but I want whoever deserves it to be homecoming king.
Jason Guo: I appreciate that my school and classmates chose me for the court because it shows that I had an impact on them and that they remembered my name.
Kaley Buchanan: I participate in many different activities, am very diverse, and have gotten to know many of my peers over the years. I believe that they selected me because they knew my grade fairly well.
Dylan Gomer: It kind of came out of nowhere. I did not see it coming. I never really thought about it. I wasn’t really expecting it; it just sort of happened.
