Everything we do at HashiCorp is grounded in our principles, and in the case of recruiting, that applies to both who and how we hire. While understanding a candidate’s functional competencies and attributes is imperative, even the most highly skilled potential hires are unlikely to thrive if their priorities and values aren’t aligned with our own.
Diversity on hiring committees is extremely valuable, but we must avoid burdening employees from underrepresented groups unfairly. This will be made simpler as we train more team members to conduct interviews and as the team itself becomes more diverse. In the interim, we must work hard to strike a balance and consider carefully which panels—such as leadership positions and other crucial positions—should receive the highest priority.
Consistency in the hiring process not only improves the experience for both interviewers and candidates, but it also helps to eliminate unconscious bias, which is one of the biggest obstacles to effective hiring. Bias can hinder us from choosing the best candidate for a position and deprive our team of the diverse viewpoints and inclusive practices that improve our products and one another.
Hiring is everyone’s job. Even though a large portion of our team frequently participates in interview panels, those of us who don’t conduct interviews still have interactions with current or potential candidates. You never know when a client, a business associate, or even your neighbor could apply for a position on our team. Therefore, it’s crucial that we all share the hiring philosophy of HashiCorp. Three fundamental principles underlie our hiring and interviewing philosophy: 1) our company values guide our hiring behavior and decisions, 2) a consistent hiring process yields the best hiring decisions, and 3) we are committed to creating diverse and inclusive teams.
Example: “I didn’t receive any formal training in coding or development when I first began working as a developer. I started enrolling in online courses on Udemy and other platforms, though, because I was eager to learn more about these subjects. I felt confident enough to start using my knowledge on real-world projects after completing several courses. I can now employ my abilities to produce successful client solutions. ”.
Example: “When I first began working as a developer, I was given the task of developing a new application that would aid our business in managing inventory. I was unsure of what to anticipate because I had never worked on a project of this size before. After working on my application for several weeks, I realized it wouldn’t work for us. Instead of giving up, I spent an additional week looking into various inventory management programs and discovered one that could satisfy our requirements. Despite the fact that it took longer than I had anticipated, I learned a lot. ”.
