Interviews for Top Jobs at Bolt

Software Engineer Interview

Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Bolt in Aug 2020

Interview

I spoke with a recruiter and then received a take-home technical assessment. I then had another short assessment with one of the engineers. The final step was a virtual on-site interview where I spoke with multiple people over the course of a few hours. The recruiter I worked with was great and checked in multiple times throughout the whole process. At the time, I was not looking for a new job. After going through the interviewing process with them, meeting everyone at Bolt, and learning about their product and their vision, I was convinced that I needed to join their team.

Interview Questions

  • Describe a project you worked on that had a number of stakeholders.

Software Engineer Interview

Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Bolt in Nov 2021

Interview

The process was typical to tech. I had a system design phone screen followed by an onsite which consisted of a programming challenge and a technical walk-through of a previous project. Everyone I talked to seemed great. My problem came during the offer.I was given an informal offer. I expressed my gratitude and excitement and that I would need to compare it with other offers from upcoming interviews. They asked me to make an offer that would stop me from interviewing other places. I responded with what I thought would have been the best offer on the table at the end. They countered with their “best and final” which was a little lower. I was more than happy with it and accepted. 2 days later, then they replied that they actually couldn’t do that and lowered the offer we agreed to. I told them I was disappointed in the offer change and, since we couldn’t agree on a “walk away” number, I would need to finish my interview process. I reiterated that Bolt was a top company for me but needed to make sure I had a full picture of the market. They replied that this was just part of the game and since I wasn’t interested in Bolt they would pull my candidacy.I find these types of recruiting tactics to be aggressive and toxic. I had a strong feeling I still would have gone with Bolt at the end of the process but after an attempted strong-arm negotiation, I feel that possible the company culture might have underlying toxicity. To any future reader, beware of these tactics!

Interview Questions

  • Write code to interact with and report on an API

The Bolt interview process is typically fairly typical for tech companies. A recruiter screens candidates over the phone first, and then an engineer conducts a technical interview. You will be invited to an on-site interview if you succeed in the technical interview. This interview will include a programming challenge and a tour of a previous project. Finally, you will be given a case study to present.

This question is a great opportunity to demonstrate to the interviewer that you are aware of the requirements for success in your position. Consider some of the most crucial qualities you seek in a candidate as you consider how these traits relate to your own qualifications and experience when responding to this question.

Example: “Creativity, organization, and positivity are my top three qualities.” I’m a creative person who enjoys finding fresh approaches to problems. I enjoy using computers because I also like to organize things. Finally, I am always optimistic, even when things get tough. This helps me stay focused on finding solutions. ”.

You can demonstrate to a potential employer that you are willing to go above and beyond what is required of you by answering this question. Additionally, it demonstrates to them your drive to succeed and desire to have an impact at work. Consider a time when you showed initiative on a project or task and it had a positive impact on yourself or others when answering this question.

Example: “In my previous position, I worked for a rapidly expanding organization. We frequently brought on new employees, but we were careful to maintain the company’s culture. To achieve this, I developed a training program that covered our mission statement, values, and goals for all new hires. This gave me the chance to introduce new hires to the team and make sure they knew what it meant to be a part of our company. ”.
