4. How would you approach developing a new product feature?

For technical roles like software engineering, expect questions testing your understanding of the software development lifecycle and your technical expertise.

  • Walk through the key phases – requirements gathering, design, development, testing, release
  • Emphasize technical best practices like version control, code reviews, unit testing
  • Share examples of your previous experience developing and releasing new features

Example: “First, I would work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to understand the goals and requirements for the new feature. My next step is to start building the feature in iterative cycles, frequently reviewing code with peers and getting feedback. I follow best practices like writing unit tests and maintaining up-to-date documentation throughout development. Before release, I would conduct extensive QA testing, fix bugs, and verify all acceptance criteria are met. Finally, I would collaborate on release planning and preparations like communications and monitoring post-deployment. Example: “I recognize that ambiguity is common when developing software and requirements can change frequently based on new insights. When I encounter vague requirements, I try to get clarity by asking probing questions and partnering with product managers to understand the problem we are trying to solve. I also find it helpful to break down requirements into smaller, verifiable components. As I work through development cycles, I constantly validate my interpretation of the requirements through discussions with stakeholders. If new information emerges, I remain flexible to reassess and adjust as needed. Maintaining an open dialogue helps minimize misalignment down the road.”

When faced with a high-pressure situation or unexpected issues, I leverage techniques like taking a short break to clear my head before responding. I also rely on my team for support and collaborate to find solutions. For example, when a critical bug emerged just before a product launch, I stayed calm, quickly gathered help from QA and Dev resources, and we worked overtime to resolve the issue within 48 hours. Despite the last-minute crisis, we successfully met our deadline and launched the product on schedule. I believe in delivering results even in trying situations.”
