To learn more about the innovative way the Gamma Psi Chapter at College of William & Mary conducts interviews and how it benefits their Big/Little program and retention, we spoke with initiate advisor Bobby Belser.
The Gamma Psi Chapter has interviews during the Initiation Program. Before initiation, initiates interview the Eboard Members, Committee Chairs, and 10 additional members. This facilitates getting to know the Chapter Members and their roles. To find that perfect Big, Initiates hold Big/Little dates. An initiate goes on three to four adventures or “dates” with a different potential Big every week, Bobby continues. The Initiates decide what to do, and these activities can include getting coffee, going for a walk, or going rock climbing. This provides an opportunity for both parties to get to know one another better. While this is going on, we have Initiation events every Sunday following the Initiates’ study hall. These include large group activities. All Members and Initiates are welcome to attend these events and get to know the Initiates better, but only the potential Bigs are required to do so in order to interact with the Initiates in a group setting. These are the main techniques we employ to get the Bigs and Littles to interact, which is very helpful in getting them to choose who they want. This has proven to be very effective for us, as we rarely experience conflicts between the new Bigs and Littles and have a very high Initiate retention rate. ”.
According to Rochester Institute of Technology’s Delta Alpha Chapter President Elizabeth Pattie, the Chapter conducts interviews before pinning:
The Recruitment Advisor, the Potential New Member (PNM), and approximately two to three other Members participate in the interview. A PNM must only appear in the interview in order to be considered for a Bid during the Recruitment Drive. We aim to better understand how closely the PNM’s values match those of PSP through the questions we pose. Some examples include:
We go through our standard questions before allowing the interviewees to ask any additional questions. The PNM will typically feel more at ease if a Member asks a silly question at this point, such as “would you rather fight a duck-sized horse or a horse-sized duck?” We allowed the PNM to ask us any questions they had. The PNM’s responses to the questions during the interview are recorded by the recruitment advisor (RA). The RA then summarizes the PNM’s answers as the first Pro (during voting), but only focuses on the answers and leaves out the tone, personality, other unconventional questions posed, etc. This aids the RA’s impartiality while enabling it to essentially serve as each PNM’s representative. In order for them to discuss those qualities since they are not expected to remain impartial, there should be two to three additional members in the room.
I believe it aids the Chapter in having a more thorough understanding of the PNMs. At recruitment events, we can mingle with PNMs and observe how they interact with others, solve problems, etc. But it prevents us from getting to know the PNMs’ interests and potential as outstanding Members. So the interview fills in those gaps. This improves the quality of those we invite to become initiates, which helps with retention and gives us better information to discuss during Pro/Con. ”.
At Truman State University, Beta Chapter President Christine Conge spoke about how her chapter conducts interviews during recruitment week.
“From Monday through Wednesday, we host an event that spans all three legs of the tripod, and on Thursday, we conduct interviews.” Our interviews are invite only. In general, we vote to invite all prospective new members to the interview stage. However, occasionally, members decide not to extend an invitation to someone if they are acting rudely or disrespectfully, or if they use exclusive or disrespectful language. We chose Thursday for our interviews because it gives the existing members a chance to see how each prospective new member interacts with our Tripod. Before choosing which candidates will advance to the interview stage, we ask more questions that are specific to Tripod on each of these days. Due to the interviews taking place at the end of the week, Members have more time to develop interviewee-specific questions. Seeing how the prospective new members behave in a professional setting is also wonderful because our interviews are formal.
We want to make sure that our new Members are someone who wants to work to make our Brotherhood stronger and be a Member for life, so we ask questions like “Why did you choose Phi Sigma Pi specifically?” and “Which leg of the Tripod do you think you are strongest in and why.” ”.

Recruitment Week is a week-long series of social, professional, and community service events that give you a glimpse into Delta Sigma Pi and allow you to learn more about who we are. You are not required to attend all of our events, but we strongly encourage you to. Additionally, one can receive a bid by doing the following:
An official invitation to join our fraternity is known as a bid. You cannot be a first semester freshman student to be eligible to receive a bid. You must also have above a 2. 5 GPA and submit an official invitation during our recruitment week, as stated by Greek Life. We have the chance to get to know you better in a more formal and professional setting during the interview process. We are looking for ambitious, intelligent people who have the desire to succeed and support our brotherhood throughout the entire recruitment process. Bring an eagerness to learn and we’ll do the rest!.
Although we are unable to extend a bid to you as a first semester freshman, you are more than welcome (and encouraged!) to recruit. Your chances of receiving a bid are significantly increased by doing this because you will already have met most of the brothers and are familiar with the procedure by the time your second semester rolls around.
