Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties. YMCA Instructor: My main responsibilities are to teach children how to learn things better, as well as to save pedestrians and protect the environment. I am a lifeguard, swimming instructor, ballet instructor, tumbling instructor, and creative movement’s instructor.

What did you enjoy most about working there, YMCA instructor? YMCA Instructor: The kids, for sure. It makes me happy to be able to work with them and say things like, “Hey, let’s play a game. At the end of the game, they had fun, but they also realized they were learning how to kick their legs, or they were learning how to jump, or they were learning how to tumble, or they were learning how to somersault, or they were learning how to roll.”

Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee. YMCA Instructor: Normally, you arrive at work about 15 minutes early and only spend two to two and a half hours—possibly four—at a time working. You arrive, prepare, leave, and teach for roughly 45 minutes before the following class arrives for another 45. Then, if you’re lucky, your day’s over. If not, you have another class in 45 minutes, after which you can either lifeguard or take another course.

YMCA Instructor: It was mostly a walk-in. Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process? I walked in and went straight to the supervisor. Then, it was a handwritten application. They asked me a few questions on-site with the walk-in. Then, about two weeks later, I had the interview. They threw me in the water after I arrived dressed in what looked like a suit and really dressy pants. Dress in business or casual with khakis, but keep in mind that this is essentially just a handwritten interview.

YMCA Instructor: They wanted to know if I had volunteer experience, experience working with children, and swimming experience. Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask you during the job interview?

YMCA Instructor: I have a very positive, cheerful personality and pretty much walked in and asked for the position straight up because I had gotten some hints from some people who had worked there. Interviewer: What makes you stand out from other applicants? And, I didn’t really dress nice. I wore jeans and a nice button-up shirt. And I believe what made me stand out was that I was very direct in my questions, smiled while they were being asked, and was very kind and polite.

YMCA Instructor: Basically, visit your local facility and inquire about any openings they may have. Interviewer: What other advice do you have for someone looking for work? Once you are aware of the positions that are open, consider which one best suits your qualifications. As a result, when you submit an application, you should speak with the supervisor in charge of that division directly since the supervisors rarely interact with one another. Therefore, they don’t really interact if you go to the aquatics supervisor rather than the dance or Pilates supervisor. If you want to be a Pilates assistant or teacher, you must visit each instructor.
