We recently conducted a meta-analysis to answer this question. Our ultimate objective was to learn how historically successful leaders have perfected the art of influence and which forms of influence are still used by effective leaders today. A great place to start was the Cross-National Time-Series Data Archive, a collection of data spanning 200 years and more than 200 nations. From a database of 700,000 books and articles, we searched for those that contained the words “influence” and “leadership” together.
The first strategy, called “transaction,” places an emphasis on real-world interactions between a leader and their followers. By identifying the immediate actions that must be taken, it focuses on improving a current situation. In the second strategy, called transformation, leaders serve as role models and motivators who give followers a sense of direction, excitement, encouragement, a boost in morale, and satisfaction.
