Spirit Halloween Interview – Team Member
Video Transcript
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Spirit Halloween Team Member: I was just a basic team member. I was in charge of running the register, helping customers on the floor, find costumes and things like that, letting them try it on. Yeah, that’s basically it.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Spirit Halloween Team Member: It was interesting, because most of the employees were from Spencer’s when spirit Halloween had opened up, so they were all, they all had their little niche and then I came in, so I was kind of like the outcast. But they were very welcoming and they were very supportive, which was really nice. It was a lot of fun to work there.
Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?
Spirit Halloween Team Member: Probably the music that they played in the store. Just the cool Halloween music that they played on loop all the time.
Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.
Spirit Halloween Team Member: I went in, I filled out my application online, and then I came in for an interview, and then I think I was hired about a week later. But then I actually, I had like an actual interview. She was like, “What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? How would you deal with a customer if they have an expired coupon?” Questions like that.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Spirit Halloween Team Member: Probably just like the experience that I had in customer service. Working at Little Caesars for so long and a few other places that… I have a lot of experience with dealing with customers and putting on a friendly face and making sure everyone feels welcome every time that they come in.
Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Spirit Halloween Team Member: It was about a week I think, and they called me up and they were like, “Hey, your interview went great. Congratulations, we’re going to offer you this job.” And then they started scheduling me my hours.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Spirit Halloween Team Member: That is a very demanding job because your entire shift you’re on your feet. There’s no chairs. I mean, you get like like a 15 minute, half-hour break depending on how long you work, and you’re constantly roaming the store, constantly cleaning, constantly stocking. So you just got to make sure that you can handle that.

They asked me all the basic employee questions: “Why do you want to work at Spirit Halloween” and “Tell us about a time you experienced conflict.” It was pretty much like National Honors Society but they cared less. Once I was done answering those questions, he’d scribbled on the entire page “Great answers.” Top to bottom of the page. After that, he took me out onto the store floor and asked one of the employees for a theme that I should put together a costume for. The employee chose spartans. The manager said “Without choosing a pre-made costume, make me the best spartan costume you can make. I came back a small man with a large shield, a toga outfit and a helmet. The helmet was broken but the manager said it was fine. I was hired on the spot.
There weren’t that many problems except that we were sometimes understaffed. My first problem was my first cashiering experience. So my boss calls me over the walkie talkie. I get there and he says “I need to run to the bathroom, can you man the register for me?” I said, “Sure. I think. Maybe? No? Yes!” He said, “Don’t worry, as long as you follow the instructions on the paper, you should be fine.” I sold like one item before he came back because I did not know how to run the register at all. It took me a while to actually sell the item to the person who came up to the bathroom. So long that my boss ended up coming back to the register and taking over. He said it was fine because it was my first time cashiering.
The whole store goes on sale the week after Halloween. Absolutely everything is 50% off. A few people come in and buy stuff. We were actually supposed to close less than a week after Halloween but we were pretty lazy about that. The last time I worked was when we were closing and cleaning up the store. Also, that was the week I learned that my boss wasn’t actually trained as a boss yet.
So to clean up we take down everything but the stuff we sell, and put it all in a big truck. People from other stores come and help. It was actually kind of nice even though I almost got crushed once or twice by the fake walls we put in the store. I almost twisted my ankle too.
It was not a bad experience at all. It was actually pretty good. It was a nice, relaxing time. It wasn’t strict but that was because my boss … my boss vapes. So I can’t really say if this is how all Spirit Halloweens are because some managers came over and were like, “My Spirit Halloween is better than this.” I didn’t know how to feel about that. I didn’t think I felt anything at all. But overall, I recommend working there. One more thing: everyone should donate to Spirit of Children. With the money donated, Spirit Halloween sets up parties for sick kids. It’s a good cause. If you donate five dollars, you can ring a bell in the store.
Tips for Success
Spirit Halloween is a laidback company, and applicants applying for sales associate jobs may dress in casual clothing for interviews. Management applicants should wear more professional business attire. All job hopefuls should exhibit passion for Halloween during interviews. Showing interest in putting together costumes and doing makeup may separate applicants from other candidates. When responding to Spirit Halloween interview questions, answers should be concise and exhibit customer focus. At the conclusion of interviews, applicants need to thank managers for their time.
