Maximum weight chart
The maximum weight limits that candidates for active and reserve duty in the Navy must meet as of 2020 are shown in the following chart:
What are Navy weight standards?
Candidates must adhere to strict weight requirements set by the Navy in order to serve on active and reserve duty. These criteria are a part of the Navy’s Body Composition Assessment, which is one of the eligibility criteria for physical fitness. The Navy conducts this assessment on individuals twice yearly. These criteria aid in ensuring that people can carry out the physical tasks that their potential role in the Navy may require. An individual may have additional body composition exams that measure body fat if they don’t meet the weight requirements.
Minimum weight chart
If a candidate is underweight, their body mass index (BMI) may be used to calculate their body fat percentage. To calculate BMI, you divide your weight by your height. For eligibility, applicants need a BMI of 19. However, people with a BMI under 19 may still be eligible. A military medical officer can conduct additional testing on them to see if they have a physical or mental disorder that is causing their underweight. The minimum eligible BMI for applicants who do not have any underlying conditions is 17. 5.
Based on applicants’ BMI, this chart shows the minimum weight needed to be eligible for the Navy:
Here are some frequently asked queries about Navy weight requirements and other specifications:
Does the Navy have height requirements?
Although there are no specific height requirements for the Navy, weight standards heavily consider applicants’ height. The chart’s most recent weight standards only shows data for people with heights between 57 and 80 inches. If an applicant’s height is outside of that range, the Navy does not grant waivers.
What happens if an applicant exceeds the weight requirements?
If a candidate weighs too much, they have their abdominal circumference measured. Male applicants must measure no less than 39 inches to pass this test. Abdominal circumference measurements for female applicants must be within 35 or less. 5 inches. They measure applicants bare skin starting at their uppermost hip bone to complete this process. The measuring tape is parallel to the floor, and this placement is in line with their armpit.
What if an applicant does not meet the abdominal circumference measurement?
An applicant who measures larger than the recommended maximum for abdominal circumference must have their body fat percentage measured. For men and women, the Navy sets a maximum body fat percentage of 23% and 34%, respectively. Men and women undergo different measurements to determine their respective body fat percentages. Women measure their necks, natural waists, and hips, while men measure their necks and abdomen. The applicant must maintain a straight posture while facing forward and keeping their arms by their sides during this process.
Male applicants’ neck circumference is calculated by subtracting their abdominal circumference. The waist and hip circumferences of female applicants are added, followed by the neck circumference, to determine their circumference value. The Navy then determines body fat percentage using male and female body fat estimation charts. Each chart has columns for circumference value and corresponding heights. The applicant determines the point at which their height and circumference value align; that number represents their body fat percentage.
What are the physical requirements to become a sailor?
People must pass the Navy Third Class Swim Test and the Navy Physical Readiness Test in addition to the Body Composition Assessment. During boot camp, individuals receive instruction that prepares them to pass the test. The swim test includes three events:
Recruits must take the Physical Readiness Test to become sailors. They take the test twice a year after joining the Navy. This test consists of the following three events:
Depending on the participants’ age and gender, the Navy establishes minimum standards to pass the test. A score of 60 demonstrates a passing grade. You would add the participants’ scores for each event to determine the score, and then divide that total by three.
What other requirements must applicants meet?
Candidates must fulfill the following fundamental requirements in addition to physical fitness and health standards in order to join the Navy:
Attending the United States Naval Academy, the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps, or Officer Training Command is another way for people to become Navy officers. This role has additional requirements, such as:
Is the Navy strict on weight?
For the Reserve and Active Duty components of the United States Navy, non-prior service and prior service applicants for officer and enlisted positions must adhere to the weight requirements based on their corresponding height in order to be eligible for commissioning, enlistment, or affiliation (see chart below).
Can you be fat in the Navy?
Since 2011, about 34,000 sailors, or roughly 10% of the force, have failed the physical requirements at least once, primarily due to body fat, according to Christensen. In accordance with the previous Navy regulations, males aged 17 to 39 could have a body fat percentage of up to 22%, while females aged 17 to 39 could have a body fat percentage of up to 33%.
Does the Navy have a weight waiver?
20% of new recruits require a waiver for their weight in order to attend boot camp. However, in order to continue training after receiving a waiver, recipients must reduce their weight and fulfill the minimum requirements before the end of boot camp.
Is there a weight limit for military?
Men must be 58-78 inches (147-198 centimeters) tall and women must be 58-72 inches (147-183 centimeters) tall as of 2020. For men, the maximum weight is 148 to 267 pounds (67 to 121 kilograms), while for women, it is 120 to 184 pounds (54 to 83 kilograms).
