What is HIL Testing in the Context of Automotive Application Development?
Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Gregory Rousseau, a Product Owner at AVSimulation for three years, is my name. I’m in charge of creating the Roadmap, observing how developments are going, and foreseeing or paying attention to the needs of customers now or in the future. On the other hand, I continue to work on a number of projects, including SERKET for RUAG Défense France, which creates a simulator for the DGA and in which our team will incorporate software interfaces.

Can you explain the acronym HIL?
HiL is the acronym for Hardware in the Loop. A HIL device, also known as a HIL bench, involves using a simulation loop to control a physical component (such as a sensor or actuator).
These days, all automobiles have electronic control units (ECUs), which are systems with inputs and outputs that integrate control laws to regulate systems (such as ADAS, air conditioning, lighting systems, etc.). ).
The specific illustration is the ability to test an ECU on a table before installing it on a vehicle. To achieve this, the ECU inputs must be fed with fictitious measurements (from a simulation loop) in order to track the development of its output values. In other words, the ECU will act on actuators after receiving information from simulated sensors, or it will instruct other ECUs.
The case of a gear lever on a vehicle with a piloted gearbox is a straightforward illustration. A sensor will detect the position of the gearshift and send the information to the ECU (the driver’s request for a gear change). In exchange, and if the eligibility requirements are met, the latter will turn on a gear change system. The shift sensor and/or gearbox actuator can both be tested and validated for such a system using the HIL bench.
Examples of ADAS are frequently more complicated, involving various sensors (real or simulated) and a computer that will eventually fuse the data from multiple sensors to verify the selection of a set point.

What is Automation testing?
Automation Testing uses an automation tool to execute test cases. Automation Testing’s primary objective is to decrease the number of test cases that must be run manually, not to completely replace manual testing.
When will you automate a test?
Automation is preferred in the following cases
Testing is not recommended for one-off test cases. Typically, the ROI (Return on Investment) is used to determine which test cases should be automated. The ROI improves as the automated test is run more often.
FAQ
What is dSPACE HIL?
The SCALEXIO-based dSPACE Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test system is a flexible and potent platform for testing HPCs for autonomous driving in closed-loop and open-loop simulation.
What is HIL in testing?
Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) is a term used in the automotive industry to describe a technique for testing and validating complicated software systems on test benches with specialized hardware that takes data inputs from real-world gadgets like radars and cameras.
What is the difference between HIL and SIL?
Early software development stages typically involve SIL testing, while later stages involve more expensive and complex hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
What types of problems can HIL test benches solve?
ECUs (Electronic Control Units) with integrated control laws or sensors can be tested using HiL benches. This is solely related to the development of electronics in the automotive industry; up until that point, mechanical tests sufficed.
