They have steady hands for detail work, patience to ensure quality, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Things like listening skills and cleanliness also can’t be overlooked in this role. I believe I possess each of these traits, which allows me to provide every client with an excellent experience while achieving beautiful results.”

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

  • Tips: Strength examples: Attention to detail, creativity, technical skills, customer focus, time management, passion for beauty. Weaknesses: Impatience, prefer working alone rather than on teams, nervous public speaking.

Example response: “I would say my biggest strengths are my creativity, my eye for detail, and my passion for the beauty industry. I love coming up with unique looks tailored to each client. A potential weakness is that I prefer working independently rather than collaboratively on projects. However, I’ve been actively working to improve my teamwork abilities.”

Lashes are always evolving so ongoing education is a must.

  • Tips: Mention reading industry magazines, following influencers on social media, taking new courses/classes, attending trade shows and conferences, networking with other techs.

Even if we couldn’t resolve it that day, I would follow up by phone or email to try to regain their trust and business.”

Eyelashes require detail work so patience is crucial.

  • Tips: Explain healthy coping techniques like taking short breaks, deep breathing, asking colleagues for advice/help when needed.

Who Is Verlee Gumban?

Verlee is the owner of Lash Maven. She used to work in the food industry but now she loves beauty and is a lash artist.

Question 1: What’s your story?

Answer: It was in 2010 that Verlee dived into the beauty industry from the food industry. It’s interesting that she didn’t really care about doing eyelashes after she graduated from beauty school; she only did them for her clients who asked her to make sure they didn’t leave without anything.

When she learned how to do lashes and saw how they looked, she gave up on her first idea and went all in on lashes. In all honesty, Verlee had no choice but to go into the beauty business because she wanted to build a business where she could set her own hours. It even did her good because of the ‘keen eye’ she developed from the beauty industry. Being a QA, lash treatments and the attention to detail it demanded was the right fit for her.

Verlee also reached out to the business coach Aaron Keith from Ascension Programs right when she began. Using the coaching services, she was fully booked within 4 months of starting her own business. Today, Verlee has a long list of clients that he got through simple word of mouth and trust.

Question 2: What are the top challenges you faced when coming into the beauty industry?

Answer: There were many challenges for this lash tech. Her first biggest hurdle was working on her own after being acquainted with teamwork. Verlee says she missed having a manager she could ask for direction or a supervisor to keep an eye on her and let her know about any problems or concerns she had.

As soon as possible, Verlee realized that as a lash tech who ran her own business, it was her responsibility to be a manager, a supervisor, and everything in between. It turns out she wasn’t aware she had to be her own accountant, IT helper, marketer, sales executive, and even cheerleader. Even though all she wanted to do was make other women feel pretty by putting on eyelashes, she now had a lot of other things she had to do.

One of the most important things that has kept her going is her own network of people who cheer her on and make sure she never feels down. Above all, she loves the exciting opportunity where every new day opens with a learning experience.

Another huge challenge that Verlee came by was saying no. It was hard for her to learn how to say “no” at the right time, even though she wished she had all the time in the world. She didn’t want to let anyone down when it came to family, her hobbies, and other things, but saying no to everything helped her reach her goals and dreams more than saying yes to everything.

Question 3: What makes you and your business different from other techs?

Answer: Currently the owner of Lash Maven Boutique, Verlee does excellent Russian Volume lashes. As she doesn’t do anything other than lash treatments, she’s an expert in the lash world. Verlee’s decision to give someone lash extensions depends on their brow shape, eye shape, and even what they do for a living. She’s all about custom eyelashes.

Her specialty? Russian Volume. The first “LashBloom” conference in North America was held in Chicago in 2013, she says. That’s when the trend hit the market. The same is where she got trained by some of the world’s best lash artists. She also mastered volume lashes during the same time. One thing that makes her stand out is making false eyelashes look natural on clients, like they don’t have any on.

Verlee enjoys hearing from her clients, who predominantly say that their friends and family have told them that their fakes always look real. And her heated spa bed is the best thing about her salon. It’s known to relax her clients and give them the best session ever.

Question 4: What’s your next milestone?

Answer: Verlee wants to open more salons now that she has a new one on 101 Coast Highway, where she works with Dawn Nicholas of Remedy Beauty and Relaxation Lounge in Encinitas. She’s working on things like progressive skin care treatments, body treatments, waxing services, falsies, massages, and reflexology techniques.

Who Is Aurélie Longuet?

Smart, charming, and an expert lash tech, Aurélie Longuet is a master lash artist from Paris in France. The first one is for classic lashes, the second one is for Star and Misentech training, and the third one is for Russian Volume training.

Question 1: What’s the Longuet story about getting into lashes?

Answer: Before she became a lash tech 30 years ago, Aurélie had a variety of jobs and career goals. Truth be told, she was even doing law when she first began working on lash treatments. But that’s a different story because she didn’t stay in law school because she loved being an eyelash tech so much.

Born to a Cambodian- French couple, she is the oldest of the six kids. Currently, she manages her own home studio in Paris for about three years. She got into lashing because she’d been getting extensions for over six years prior to learning the art. At first, she did it just for fun, but later she realized it was her true love.

First, she worked hard on two of her girlfriends. Then, she worked hard on clients who gave her great reviews. That got her into thinking ‘why not make it her full-time job’.

Question 2: What’s your conclusion about being a lash tech?

Answer: She had zero fears when she started doing lash treatments at first. Overall, running her own lash business is something she absolutely loves doing. She loves organizing her calendar, setting up appointments, and spreading the word about her brand.

Aurélie aims to make the perfect lash treatments to suit every eye she works on. The best part of her job is meeting new people and getting to know each person she works with on a personal level.

Question 3: What makes you different from other lash techs?

Answer: Her main unique thing is that she isn’t a clock-watcher. Most lash techs are in a race to see who can finish the most quickly, but Aurélie is proud that she never checks the time while she does lashes. Her goal is one- give every client perfect lashes, no matter how long or short it takes.

She also doesn’t think twice about spending a lot of money on good products and tools to make the whole process go very smoothly. Also, Aurélie keeps in touch with all of her clients, which is another reason why new lash techs should look up to her.

Question 4: What’s her signature style of lash treatment?

Answer: Most of Aurélie’s clients ask for a natural look. That’s why she is immensely experienced in doing perfect lashes. This lash tech doesn’t try to make dramatic or fake-looking lashes. It’s important to her that lash extensions make the client’s eyes look better without making them look fake or false. This is the same reason why she prefers volume for lashes over length. Finally, she always wears lashes with a matte finish instead of ones that are shiny or glossy to finish off the natural look.

Question 5: What’s your secret for getting and keeping lash clients for other artists?

Answer: She is all about perfection and comfort. Firstly, quality time and products are high up on her list of priorities. Good communication is also the highest priority. She never coaxes clients into getting falsies. Aurélie believes clients should take their own time to decide whether or not they want falsies. Lastly, she doesn’t have any problem saying no to clients who want treatments that might damage their eyes.
