The Delta Sigma Theta interview is just like a normal job interview. So my advice is to be as prepared as if you were applying for a job. Show your strengths, make sure you know and answer why you want to join this great organization, and become a professional. I think its amazing that hes so committed to charity, keep up the good work!

However, once you agree, you will ask yourself some difficult questions to prepare yourself. Why, for example, Delta? Yes, yes, this is the father! But all you can say is, what do you know about Delta? Are you right about Delta? Delta is right for you?

and a host of other organizations. As a matter fact, if youre interested in Delta, the best way to get to know Deltas is for you to get active in some of the other organizations that we are active in. We will notice your work and consider you an asset to Delta.
How do you act at the Rush?
Treat it like a JOB INTERVIEW! Its really very similar… you want to show off your best qualities and youve got a short time to do it. Make it count. Dont be overbearing, but its not wise to appear aloof, either. Be friendly and show genuine interest. Ask questions, but not those that you already know the answer to or ones that have obvious answers. If you see a Delta there who you know from some other part of your life, make sure you make contact with her and let her know where you know her from. Several undergrads have asked what they can do if the Delta chapter at their school is suspended. The answer is simple… nothing, short of transferring to a school where the chapter is not suspended. If the chapter will not be active by the time you graduate (and you dont want to transfer), set your sights on an alumnae chapter after you get your degree. You cannot pledge at a school with an active chapter unless you are enrolled there as a degree-seeking student. If you are attending part-time, you must be taking at least half of the credits required to be a full-time student. Can you pledge an undergraduate chapter if you are still at that school persuing a graduate degree? NO. Once you have received a bachelors degree, you no longer qualify for undergraduate membership. You must be invited (YES, INVITED!) to join a graduate (alumnae) chapter.
A frequent question is ” How do I let the Deltas on my campus/in my community know that I am interested without being annoying”?
The answer depends on whether you already know a Delta. If you know one and feel comfortable with her, then simply express your interest, requesting that you be notified if membership intake is scheduled. If you later hear that membership intake is scheduled and you havent gotten any information about it, express your interest again…. but dont “hound” us. We DO have lives outside of Delta. If theres a Delta youd really like to get to know better, try inviting her to lunch (or brunch on Sunday afternoon), making it clear when you extend the invitation that youd like to get to know her better and find out about Delta. Then use that time to tell her how you feel about Delta, what you have to offer the sorority, what youve done to prepare yourself. Ask her about her own involvement in Delta and if there are upcoming activities that you can help with or participate in. Ask her opinion of what you should be doing to prepare yourself. You cant “buy” her vote, but shell remember that you invited her and shell probably look upon you favorably because you took a chance. She may even recommend you to her other chapter members! If you do not know a Delta, YOURE NOT DOING ENOUGH PUBLIC SERVICE! Get out there and work in your community and you will surely meet one. It also wouldnt hurt to attend any public Delta functions that you can. You will need to submit a letter of recommendation from an active Delta. If she does not know you well, she cannot write this letter for you, so please dont ask a Delta you barely know to recommend you! How well should she know you? Well enough for her to leave her children with you – or leave you alone with her husband – or give you a key to her home or car. Deltas are SISTERS, remember. How much are dues? Youll be given this information when you attend a RUSH… Until then, you really dont need to know. Guess what? Just because you meet the minimum requirements for membership (GPA, public service, recommendations, etc.) doesnt mean youll be selected! Surprised? Dont be… Every Delta in the chapter that you apply to has a vote – and you must get a majority of those votes. If you dont get a majority, you will NOT “make line”… plain and simple. Delta is a MEMBERSHIP organization – you dont just AUTOMATICALLY get in. If you are approached to join a “Delta Interest Group”, DONT DO IT! Delta Sigma Theta Sorority does not have or sanction interest groups. A couple of final notes… Are you willing to make a FINANCIAL commitment to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority? Its not enough to pay to pledge – Deltas business takes ONGOING financial support. Too many people have been willing to spend a small fortune to get in and then complain about dues once they are members. Delta is not just a lifetime commitment… Delta is a LIFESTYLE! We do not need people who only wear tshirts or step. If you cannot make Delta and its programmatic thrusts a prominent part of your life FOR THE REMAINDER OF YOUR LIFE, please find another sorority. If you have a question that is not answered here, send me an email message and Ill try to answer it… but PLEASE proofread what you write. I have received countless messages from prospectives who cannot form simple sentences. If you cant understand what you wrote, dont expect me to understand what youve written. I will not tell you what your answer should be, since each person will have her own reasons… but this is something that you must SERIOUSLY consider. It is not sufficient to say that you want to be a Delta in order to emulate your mother, aunt, sister, teacher, etc…. ESPECIALLY if that person has not remained active with Delta.
