Job interviews are stressful enough without adding the nuances of virtual interviewing, which can include unexpected appearances by family members or roommates, audio issues that cause awkward silences, or your dog barking at the delivery person. Don’t worry if you’re feeling a little anxious. You’re not alone. Many job seekers are becoming familiar with this new, virtual environment.

1. Pick a good location. Sit in front of a window or in a room with good lighting for video interviews to avoid having shadows on your face. When selecting a window location, take into account any potential distractions like people, cars, or puppies. Also, check there’s no private information visible in the background.

2. Limit any distractions (within your power!). We are aware that the pandemic has altered many people’s daily routines, so your interviewers will be sympathetic if unexpected family members or pets appear during the interview. However, you can reduce screen distractions by turning off phones, tablets, and smart home appliances, closing browsers, and other applications when they’re not in use.

3. Start setting up early. Technical issues happen. To be on time and leave a good impression, test your technology as soon as possible. Before the interview, download WebEx, familiarize yourself with it, and test your webcam and microphone. If possible, have backup headphones handy. View our instructions for interviewing via WebEx.

4. Dress for success. I firmly believe that “look good, feel good,” so dress to impress for an increase in self-assurance. Your attire should be appropriate for the position for which you are interviewing. Wear your entire outfit even though only the top half of your body will be visible. You never know if you’ll need to stand up mid-interview.

5. Let your personality shine. Even though it might feel awkward to be yourself on the phone or in a video, authenticity is respected. We’re not just interested in your credentials and professional background; we want to understand everything that makes you, you. Share your unique perspective, experiences and personal interests.

Stanton: You know what’s interesting, though? I think it resonated more during the [President Barack] Obama administration than during the [President Donald] Trump administration because everyone who’s really [been following] this project is so fixated on Trump at the moment, and they follow him all day long. On a personal note, Ive been eager to interview Stanton for years. We are both alumni of the University of Georgia, which is where I first heard his story. In 2012, I was working at the student newspaper, The Red & Black, when a colleague profiled Stanton about Humans of New York.

I believe that confronting someone on a very deep level and pressuring them to do things that other people wouldn’t give them the respect to do makes them listen intently. Because it demonstrates that you are paying close attention and are spotting inconsistencies in their story, challenging someone is a sign of respect.

“I wanted to do the right thing with all of my heart, but selling drugs was simple.” Everyone was doing it. I mean, I’m not using that as an justification; I took independent action. But I grew up around these Robin Hood characters who would buy school supplies for children returning to school or pay the rent for an elderly woman who was about to be evicted after selling drugs. All my friends were doing it. It almost seemed fashionable. I never felt proud of it. I always imagined moving on to a job with the Transit Authority or something similar, something I’d feel good about, but I ended up moving on to prison. I did six years. Since everyone around me was still making easy money when I got out and I couldn’t find employment, it was tempting for me to go back to it. There aren’t many businesses looking to give people a second chance, but fortunately I discovered an organization that assists ex-convicts. I’ve had this job for a few years now. You know what product I’m selling now? Myself. Everyone around here is my client. Times Square is a drug to these people. And I’m cleaning up all the trash so they can experience Times Square in its entirety. ”.
