Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties. Cinemark Cashier: So at Cinemark, I was just a cashier and concessionist. At the cash register, their main job would be to sell tickets and snacks and deal with customers. After movies, they would also have to clean the theaters.
Interviewer: What was the work environment like? Cinemark Cashier: So the work environment was actually very comfortable. Everyone on your small team was friendly, and the work was split up evenly, so everyone knew what they needed to do that day. Every person who came in would look at their schedule to see what job they had that day, and then they would be put in their own area. Overall, I think it would be a lot of fun. It would be more of a casual job where you did what you were supposed to do. But outside of that, you could try to improve your customer service skills and show that you might be better at that, clean faster, or take on more cleaning duties.
Interviewer: What was your favorite thing about working there? Cinemark Cashier: My favorite thing about working there would be how fast everyone gets things done. Even though it was a smaller Cinemark, all the movies would start at the same time, so there would be a huge crowd of people all at once. So for an hour and a half, you’d be working nonstop, customer after customer, with hundreds of people. It would be very fast-paced, but the tasks would be simple enough that you could get into a good rhythm. Then there would be a break for about an hour while you waited for the movies to start. During that time off, you can talk to your coworkers, but you’re also cleaning the lobby and getting ready for the next big rush of customers. The flow of hard work followed by some rest time was very good. You could relax while still getting ready for the next rush.
Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process. Describe the hiring process: I pretty much just walked up to the front desk and asked if they were hiring. They said that they were, so I asked for an application and filled it out. A week or so later, they called me and asked me to come in for an interview. I did, and they asked me some basic questions about my life outside of work, like what I do for fun, school, and extracurricular activities. Then they gave me some made-up situations to think about: what would I do if I worked there and a customer did something or something happened in a certain situation? How would I react? What would I do to make things better if something did go wrong?
The interviewer asked how you found out you got the job. The Cinemark cashier said it took them about a week to call me. People had already sent in applications, and I think they looked at those as well. They also did a few other interviews, maybe three after I came in for mine. But yeah, about after a week they called me and they asked if I would like the job. First, they asked me if I was still interested in the job. When I said yes, they offered to have me come back and show me the upstairs and take me to an office to look over the paperwork I would have to fill out. They also asked me what my schedule would be like and what they were looking for in terms of work availability and specifics for the job, if I would still be willing to do that. I think they really wanted to make sure I was still interested in the job they were offering. I filled out the paperwork and had a training day probably two weeks later, after they made sure I was okay with it. This is because they have to wait for the paperwork to be approved by the company. So about two weeks after that I did a training day, and then I started working.
Asker: What made you different from other applicants? Cinemark Cashier: I think my ability to handle things on my own was one of the things that really helped me get the job. A lot of people, especially those who have never had a job before or are starting their first one, would go to the manager and ask what to do if something went wrong or a customer was thoroughly annoyed. But the manager isn’t always available, or they may have other things to attend to. So a lot of my answers were about how I would handle a situation or how I would calm down a heated argument with a customer, or how I could help them as an employee. Even though I can’t give away a lot of free stuff, there are other things you can do as an employee and ways to talk to a customer that will make them feel like they are an important part of the experience and that you care about how you can make it better.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to someone looking for work? Cinemark Cashier: If someone wants to work at a Cinemark, I would say to show that you’re interested in movies. Having a hobby won’t always get you a job, but if you’re working in customer service or something where you’ll be dealing with customers, that short conversation with an employee is a big part of why people enjoy going to a store or movie theater. So, if you’re talking to someone about how excited they are about a new Marvel movie and you’re also excited about the same movie, you can say it really quickly. It really enhances the customer’s experience and makes you appear like a better employer. If you have a hobby and a job that involves that hobby, you should definitely go for it.

Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties. Cinemark Usher: At Cinemark, there are three different job titles; there’s box office, there’s concession, and there’s usher. Sometimes, an usher will go to the top of the theater to check the projectors, change the film, and make sure everything is okay with the movie and the projectors. Other than that, they usually have to be a certain age to do that. It requires being by yourself all the time. They got rid of that because a lot of it is now done automatically. At the movies, you usually do one of the other three. At the box office, they mostly sell tickets, give refunds to people who need them, and deal with customers before they even go into the movie theater. Then, there’s the concession stand. They buy their popcorn or candy or drinks or anything like that. Then, as an usher, you have a job during your shift. As a crew of ushers, you take turns checking the theaters and cleaning them up between movies, or you check the lobby and bathrooms to make sure everything is clean. For two hours, each usher is supposed to rotate. Every two hours, they rotate, they stand on post. People come back there with their tickets, and they tear them up, show them to their movie, and show them the way. They also make sure that everyone has paid to get in, so that there are enough tickets for everyone.
People asked you what your favorite thing about working there were. Cinemark Usher: I would say working with people I like and making money were my favorites. The job itself I liked. It also had pros, like letting you watch a movie with a friend, which was a bigger plus. It was also able to work around my schedule. It’s easier to have a job that lets me do what I want, when I want, and in a nice, family-friendly place. So, that’s what I like about it.
If someone asked you to describe the application and interview process, you would say: “The application process… when I went through it, I heard they were hiring.” I went in and asked for an application and when the next hiring would be. That was October 2009, and they told me they would be hiring in November. So, I filled out the application. Once a week, I would actually call to check on it. I was really interested in the job at the time, so I would check on it by going to see how my application was going. Then, the last week of October, they called and gave me an interview time to come on through. I went in. There were some questions about movie theaters and some about me, like what I like, what I need to work on or develop more, and what my strengths and weaknesses are. The interview wasn’t that long. It took them about a week to call me and tell me I got the job. They told me to sign the papers, give them my tax information, and set up direct deposit from the movie theater in my bank account. And after that, I think I started working within the next few days. So, it wasn’t like a long process. The part I had to wait the longest was probably from when I filled out my application to when they hired me. That was probably the longest part, but other than that, it went pretty quick.

Dealing with people who aren’t as grateful for being able to go to the movies—people who come in with a bad attitude because things are taking longer than planned—or we get a lot of people who come to the wrong theater because they don’t have the movies that were supposed to be in the newspaper. People are to blame, so they’re looking for people who can handle the stress or are good with people. They want honest people who can handle all the money and can trust them with different movie theater situations. They are working on the candy, the cash registers, and everything else. They were just looking to see what your strengths and weaknesses are as a person and as someone who works with a lot of other people.
If someone is looking for work, what other advice would you give them? Cinemark Usher: I’d tell them to be on time all the time. People don’t have to wear a suit and tie to the interview, but they should look nice by wearing dress pants, dress shoes, and a nice shirt. This shows that you’re interested and not just going because you have to or don’t want to. If you don’t want to dress up, wear jeans and a t-shirt instead. You might get the job, but if you look good, it shows that you care about getting it. Make sure they’re not there when you are, because a lot of people get hired because they know some people.
