There was no need for them, either, on Monday night at Lincoln Center, when said evening consisted of watching Mr. Lauren being interviewed onstage by none other than the queen of talk shows, Oprah Winfrey. Although the Deco-from-the-future stage was a little nicer than her set — with Mr. Lauren and Ms. Winfrey sitting on gravity-defying carbon-fiber chairs, backed by movie screens in beveled ebony picture frames — you could not escape the feeling that they were taping a bonus episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” recently departed. Some guests glanced under their seats to see if they were getting a surprise.
“I’m back in the two chairs,” Ms. Winfrey said, wearing a red gown with a crisscross bodice that created a loose portrait neckline (it was designed by Mr. Lauren, of course), and lacquered red heels that were visible as she sat with her legs crossed. “How’d that happen so soon?”
Drawing Mr. Lauren out onstage, for a benefit that raised more than $7 million jointly for Lincoln Center and the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, was a fairly big deal, given the designer’s reluctance to grant interviews (unless they are suitably regal affairs). Ms. Winfrey, who interviewed him in May for one of the final episodes of her show, paid homage and beyond, at one point saying it took her 25 years to get an interview with Mr. Lauren, at another describing a feeling of awe as she drove by his Colorado ranch, measuring the length of the front fence (seven miles).
The questions were signature Oprah: “How’d you get to be so darned American?” “Do you still break the rules, Ralph?” “Were you ever scared?” “What makes you most proud?”
And the answers were signature Ralph, touching, surprisingly humble. “I’m scared every day,” Mr. Lauren said. When he watches videos of his old fashion shows, he said, “my hands get sweaty, and I say I can’t believe I lived through that.” He keeps all his old clothes, “because you never know when you’re going to need them.”
As they wrapped up, Ms. Winfrey noted that she wished she had seen one of his shows, and wouldn’t you know it, Mr. Lauren said, “Let me show you, Oprah.”
We won a fashion show! The curtains parted to reveal a stage set that looked just like the real thing, with nearly 50 models walking in looks from his spring collection.
Now, this is no knock on Ms. Winfrey, but the audience, in addition to celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld, Michael J. Fox and Harold Ford Jr., included a surprising number of professional interviewers who might have had their own questions for Mr. Lauren. The postshow dinner crowd was oddly dominated by media heavyweights, like Barbara Walters, Anderson Cooper, Matt Lauer and Tom Brokaw.
Brian Williams, the NBC News anchor, said that he would have asked Mr. Lauren about his museum-certified collection of vintage automobiles. “I’m a car guy,” Mr. Williams said. “I want to know his favorite car.”
Al Roker, the weather anchor on the “Today” show on NBC, said: “Can I get a discount? I also would have asked if he ever wonders how a guy from the Bronx became America’s arbiter of taste and culture. I’m from Brooklyn and Queens, and no one wants to wear my stuff.”
Alina Cho, a CNN national correspondent, noting Mr. Lauren’s evidently semiformal version of black tie, said she would have asked him, “Are you wearing jeans?”
Andy Cohen, the host of “Watch What Happens Live” on Bravo, said: “I would want to know his unvarnished opinions about people who have tried to copy his American-ness. I would leave it to him to name names.”
So, at the end of the night, their questions were put to Mr. Lauren, Oprah style.
Interviewer: Please describe your job title and primary duties.
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: My title was sales associate. My primary duties were customer service and I would take care of the back section also. Replenishment and sometimes I was in the cashier but that was not my job.
Interviewer: Please describe a typical day as an employee.
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: I would come in, punch in and then the manager would give me a list of the things that I will have to do. Let’s say that day we had a goal, I’d have to memorize it just in case the manager of my manager would come in and ask us, what would be the goal for that day. Then once in a while every month we would have to go around the store and see if we were missing stuff, like merchandise and stuff like that. That will be my daily routine. Oh, and welcome every customer that comes to the store.
Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: It was around fall period so I would just walked in the store. A friend of mine told me, “Oh, they’re hiring.” I just walked in, talked to the manager and the manager said, “Sure, here’s the application, can fill it and bring it back.” Then a week later they called me they said I had good references. They called them and said you’re reliable, so we want you to work with us.
Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: They asked about my goals in life, my grades, if I was a volunteer anywhere. Later on I found out after the interview that they asked the same question just to find out if I would be lying or not. That was a really big thing with them. They said if you were to lie with us, we would not want you even though you had good references because we don’t want nobody that’s not trustworthy. That was the main, a really good let’s say priority with them, loyalty to the store.
Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the interview?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: I waited about a week and I received a call from the manager. I was in class at the time. They left me a message saying that they wanted me to come in and fill in the paperwork and start working with them.
Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Ralph Lauren Sales Associate: I would say go for it. It’s not that hard, especially if you’re in college.
