What are some tips for making the right career choice?

When it comes to finding the right career, there are several things to take into consideration. To help you make a strategic decision regarding your career choice, consider the following:

Dont get influenced

When you research careers, avoid getting influenced by the career choices of those around you. What might be the right career for them might not be the right career for you. Base your decision on your own interests, skills and passion.

Focus on your greatest strengths

As you look for the right career, keep your biggest strengths in mind. Though you can always work on your skill set, starting your research with jobs you know youd be good at can lead you in the right direction. It can also improve your chances of job satisfaction.

Work as a volunteer

To learn more about the careers youre interested in, consider volunteering. Doing this provides you with greater insight regarding a particular career, which can help you determine whether you want to continue pursuing it.

Consider your finances

While you may have a few careers in mind, make sure they meet your financial needs and goals. The career you pursue needs to meet these needs for you to afford your daily living expenses or to meet the financial goals youve set for yourself.

How to make a career choice

Making a strategic decision regarding your future career helps ensure that youll find satisfaction with your position in the workforce. As you make your career choice, consider your interests and unique skill set to help you find a career you can succeed in. Use these steps to make the right career choice:

1. Assess yourself

Before you make a career choice, learn more about yourself to ensure you find a good fit. For example, consider your values, your skills, your interests and your personality type. Taking each of these into consideration makes it easier to find the right job for you.

Consider taking a career aptitude test or using a self-assessment tool to learn more about your unique traits. This can help you make a list of potential careers you want to pursue. You can also meet with a career counselor to help you find the right fit.

2. Make a list of potential careers

Create a list of occupations you want to learn more about. Between the careers you were already thinking of and the results of the career aptitude test or self-assessment tool, you should have plenty of occupations to explore. Make sure to include occupations that appeal to you, ones that came from the career test or self-assessment tool and any professions you dont know much about but would like to explore further.

3. Research the careers on your list

Once youve compiled your list, narrow it down to 10-20 occupations. Research basic information about each of these occupations. For example, research job descriptions and the education, training and licensing requirements. You should also research advancement opportunities with each of these professions and look into salary data to give you an idea of what you might earn with this career.

4. Narrow down your list

When youve gathered enough basic information about these occupations, narrow down your list again, this time to around two to five professions. Eliminate any careers youre no longer interested in.

To help you eliminate occupations, consider which careers you find unacceptable, which have duties you dont find interesting and which you no longer want to know more about. You should also eliminate any careers that have poor job outlooks so you dont have trouble looking for employment with these professions in the future. Also, remove any occupations from your lists that have requirements you cant meet.

5. Meet with people who have these careers

With a few professions left on your list, plan to meet with people who have these occupations youre interested in. Having an informational interview allows you to speak with people who know what its like to work in these professions firsthand. Meeting with them allows you to ask questions you have about each of these careers before making your final decision. To find people you know with these positions, look into your network.

6. Choose the right career for you

Once youve conducted in-depth research, make your career choice. Choose the career that youre not only interested in, but the one that you think will provide you with the greatest satisfaction based on your research. Keep in mind that you can always change your mind and pursue another career.
